BT Halo three made a promise ‘

‘Price promise. Never pay more than a new customer when you renew your contract. No exceptions.‘ a new customer will pay £5.14 less than me for exactly the same package. I failed to understand why if I am not going to pay more than a new customer, as they promised, I am being asked to pay more than a new customer

Ah, I've been caught like that too. Years ago I had a free upgrade to Halo. Now a new customer gets £35, I get £65.

What it omits to say is you'll never pay more than a new "Halo" customer.

Don't think I'll be with BT much longer. Welcome to the club.

Yes Halo 3 was and is just a device that BT invented to enable them to "keep" their price promise while still offering new customers as little as half the price paid by existing ones.
New customers are always offered non-Halo deals, while a few years back existing customers were offered "upgrades" to Halo when they were offered ADSL to VDSL upgrades. This happened to me and I'm now stuck with a £60/month "deal" while new customers get half that or even less.
A few existing customers have managed to downgrade to a non-Halo deal but you've got to be prepared to spend an hour of more on the phone, argueing with an agent who is incentivized by commission not to downgrade you and instead to "upgrade" you to an even more expensive deal with EE.
It's barrow-boy sales tactics and BT should be ashamed of itself for using such methods.

They can stuff spending a hour on the phone, cap-in-hand.

I'm finalising whether I want to stay with Openreach for the upgrade to FTTP or go with CityFibre. Both are available to me and the ISP I have my eye on now offers both. It's just not clear if I can choose.

(Edit: Their TV has always been better too, whereas BT's has just gone downhill).

Thanks, thought it was probably the case but the guy I spoke to didn’t really seem to know what he was talking about so I thought I’d check it out

Personally, think they should be reported for it. It’s misrepresentation but I expect they’ve got something in very tiny print to get them out of it.

I understand that it is disappointing to hear that people might be paying less for their plan than you, however, this guarantee does only ensure you are paying less than new customers who have the same plan as you.

Halo 3 was a brilliant weez by BT to offer a product you thought was special but in reality is completely pointless.

A brave attempt by a moderator to defend the indefensible!
I would just point out that new customers are NEVER offered the Halo plan so they will never have the same plan as existing customers, until of course their contract comes up for renewal when BT will try to "upgrade" them.

You are correct, it is in indefensible. The promise stated ‘Never pay more than a new customer when you renew your contract. No exceptions.‘ it did not state ‘Never pay more than a new Halo 3 customer when you renew your contract. No exceptions.‘ At the very least, it is misleading.

Yes. Just checked the latest position. For the upgrade I'm interested in, two years for a new customer: £839.76 Two years if I renew: £1,625.28 Not even remotely justifiable.

I'm sure someone will be along shortly to 'advise' you to spend some of your precious time negotiating with BT Retentions because you may well end up with a fantastic contract renewal. That's why I did One Touch Switching so I didn't have to go through wasting precious moments of my life talking to someone wanting to get a commission. I'm paying 10 quid a month less for the same Mbps than I was paying with BT. Sure, I no longer have Ipv6, but it's made not a jot of difference to my life. All this dumb merry go round of trying to get cheaper broadband when 'new' customers are offered much lower prices. I'm just amazed that there are still so many folks out there who NEVER switch and just keep paying the year on year inflated prices. Absolutely barmy!

I can completely understand why people don't switch. My BT 500mbps works perfectly even in the garden.

My partner would go ballistic if I jeopardised that for the sake of saving a few quid.

Sometimes it's about more then the price.

@WSH - do you know where I can easily select a Halo 3+ package on the BT website that will enable me to check a 'like for like' package with a new customer?

As far as I can see, you cannot purchase Halo 3+? You can build a package to include Complete WiFi & Hybrid Connect, but there is no longer a simple Halo package to make a comparison.

Halo 3+ is a SCAM.......it's mis-selling akin to PPI. I wonder how many people are affected? The 'Price Promise' is fake advertising, as the prices are hidden for a product that is no longer sold.

Side note: I've had 3 orders now placed by BT (without my approval) to switch to Digital Voice.

They don’t sell Halo to new customers, so no. The BT website will give you the new customer prices. If you then try to follow it through, it identifies you as an existing customer from the post code and phone number and directs you to MyBT, where you get the price they expect you to pay for (effectively) the same package with Halo.

DV is fine, though. I was moved two years ago. Works fine and no change of contract involved, so I won’t fault that. (Note, the change to DV does not require an upgrade to full fibre, which is where they may try to recontract you. DV works fine over copper. As I said, I've been using it over copper for two years now).

It is perfectly possible to switch ISP without any degradation of service, I know, I've done it several times. I too get 500mbps perfectly well in the garden, indeed I get fantastic WiFi all over my house. I have to have reliable WiFi because my Wife WFH full time. But then I also don't use an ISP router because from experience, they've been at best, garbage, but that's my personal opinion!
