Unauthorised monthly charges

Hello,

I have recently found that despite not having a BT account or having ever purchased a BT service, I have had monthly payments taken from my bank account by BT:

BT CONSUMER RECURRING LONDON GB

This has been happening since Jan.2022.

Which number or email can I use to raise and solve this issue?

You beat me to it! How does that even work? Paying for something for over 3 years and just not noticing? I know I'd notice something like that.

Did you at any time try a "free for a month" service such as BT sports or some other type of service. If you did the onus is on you to cancel after the trial period.

You have not said how much the charge was for so it is not possible to hazard a guess as to which service you have been paying for or how it has come about.

You will need to contact BT Billing 0330.1234.150 to establish what the service is.

This sounds like a possible TNT sports pass, although without the amount it is hard to say for certain. Deffo best calling customer care and have them look into it.

Not the customer's fault. This is a predatory company. They are usually smallish amounts that mount up. The issue is the company thieving from former customers, using the fact they keep your financial details on file. This in itself surely is a breach of GDPR. Companies have to ask if you still want to be kept on a mailing list/ have your details stored. Let alone financial details! They then use this to take money without your consent or knowledge.

Er no...if you sign up for a service it's up to you to cancel if you no longer want it.

Infantile approach to personal finance is not a good look or a credible excuse.

@formercustomer001 If a customer takes out a subscription for a service and then fails to cancel it when they no longer use it, or, they somehow have such financial ineptitude that they ‘forget’ they’ve never cancelled it because they simply never check their statements, then surely that’s entirely the customer’s fault?

For example, just a month ago, I took out a one month trial subscription with the most well known software company in the world. A couple of days ago, I decided that I didn’t want to proceed with paying £8.99 a month, so I cancelled the trial. The onus is completely on me. It isn’t the company involved fault if I don’t cancel the subscription.

I’m still amazed how many people take out TV passes for various channels and then completely forget about them for in some cases, years! Then, lo and behold! they somehow ‘discover’ they’ve been chucking money down the toilet every month because they can’t keep a handle on their own finances. Then all of a sudden, it’s not their fault. It beggars belief.

You obviously don't know about GDPR and Internet Providers. They are mandated by law to keep customers data for a set period. I would give you the full details but it would be better for you to do your own research to find out so that the next time you post something you will be factually correct.

Actually no, They are not entitled to keep bank details of ex customers. I contacted the Information commissioner and they advised this is likely a breach of GDPR and to file a complaint with the ICO. What entitles you to be so patronising? particularly when you don't know what you're talking about. FYI the trickle down is never coming. BT CEO is a multi millionaire. Keep waiting for your crumbs, if you keep that up, maybe they'll throw you one - 🙂

Are you able to explain how it was that you paid for a service you stated you never purchased (from your first post) for around 3 years and a half years? You have so far completely evaded that rather important fact.

How does one have absolutely no idea of what is going out of their account for so long and then takes to a public forum and blame in this case BT for apparently breaching GDPR when you could have dealt with this literally years ago? Or have I just completely misunderstood how you ended up in this situation?
