Good question. I want to know the notice period at end of contract to stop rolling contract BT have told me they are withdrawing Fibre 250 over copper wire given Openreach have decided to retire the G-fast technology, but have not provided a full fibre alternative to my house as yet.

Thanks this is helpful. However, the article states they will move me to SOGEA which will still give me slower speeds or up to 80 Mbps based on distance to cabinet, so I will get less speeds. It also states BT will also provide customers with their premium Halo 3 add-on (i.e. enhanced support, the ‘Keep Connected Promise’ with 4G backup, a price promise and WiFi guarantee etc. However, interest ingly enough they never once mentioned this on my calls with them. However, given 4G is patchy in my postcode then maybe this is not a meaningful benefit to me anyway.

You need to give 30 days notice if you want to cease your rolling contract.if moving to another ISP you just use the One Touch Switching method and the new ISP does all the work including contacting your present ISP.

I would advise not getting a Halo contract. It is an expensive add on that most people if not all do not need.

Just go for a basic broadband contract and if needed get a broadband with landline phone contract. Either way it will be much cheaper than a Halo contract.

Why even take out a contract at all? I've been out of contract for years with FTTC broadband & landline (now digital voice with SH2). I can see no disadvantage at all, and have never, ever, found a BT 'deal' which is actually worth bothering with, plus I can leave anytime if so inclined.

Did you get your initial information from the article that’s linked to ? you point out the parts you don’t like , but article also states ( although it’s not ‘official’ just the usual ‘well placed credible sources’ ) that Gfast customers won’t be held to term when it’s removed , so whats the issue ? why omit this particular part ? , if BT say you can have a replacement service but you consider that to be inferior to what you currently have , you can walk away penalty free ….if and when this speculative article is proved to be accurate, I have no doubt you will be able to walk away penalty free, but wanting this confirmed now when no official statement has actually been made is somewhat premature

thanks, that is ultimately what I will do, but I have to secure an alternative full fibre contract which I am working on I just wanted to understand more on my rights to end the contract when minimum period is finished as they roll on monthly unless you give 30 days notice.

@apoplectic It would be interesting to know exactly how much you're paying for your rolling monthly contract price if you've never bothered renegotiating?

If you've never renegotiated, then perhaps we can all learn something from you about how you year on year, absorb the annual increases. I know full well that if I didn't switch or renegotiate my contract every two years, by now, I would be paying almost £70 a month instead of the £30ish a month that a new customer gets on 500mbps (broadband only on FTTP). So for some of us, sitting there and doing nothing, is not an option my bank balance is willing to suck up.

As for leaving at any time, yes, I get it, but then I can leave at any time after the initial 24 month contract and move somewhere else without even having to speak to some call centre script reader. Plus, the 'personal offers' in App are usually far more expensive than what new customers pay and I cannot be bothered in my life speaking to someone on the phone.

I regularly renegotiate on contract renewal or when upgrading but this has caused me issues with subsequent service setups. Suffice to say if they cannot keep my superior fibre speed because they do not want to put full fibre cable in then I will just switch to another provider that can.

As the OP is on Gfast , a product you can’t buy (and haven’t been able to for quite some time ) without the comparison of what a new customer could pay , knowing what the OP currently pays is a little irrelevant , as there is no way to know if that price is good , bad or indifferent, comparing to other products or providers is pointless ….the OP does state that as they are out of contract presumably the deals to renew were never sufficient to outweigh the flexibility of being outside a minimum term .

TBH , the question has been answered , notice required is 30 days if simply quitting , if migrating to a new provider, using OTS then there is effectively no notice , the period waiting for the new service depends on the timescales of the new provider, but if outside a minimum term , no early termination charges and effectively the only notice is the time the new provider takes to deliver their services.

A potential problem for the OP is if they are given a window to make a decision, something like you can quit penalty free or take the SoGEA service but you need to make a decision within 30 days of the notification, not responding taken as deemed consent to the new arrangement, if the different network operator they want to use isn’t available immediately then they may be in a predicament, however the most likely case is moved to SoGEA (so slower) but no new contractual tie in .
