Activation Fees for new customers

BT/EE/Plusnet to introduce activation fees from today for new customers according to ISP Review

The change means that, from later this morning, new customers of BT and EE will need to pay a £30 one-off activation fee, which drops to £20 for Plusnet customers. The lower price for Plusnet probably reflects their greater use of older and often re-branded BT/EE kit.

If you are already a BT Broadband customer you do not pay an activation fee for moving to a different broadband package, even if it is from FTTC to FFP.

What if I already have the kit supplied by EE but want to change back to BT?

Hey there, @imjolly

I've checked all of our guidance around this, and with migrations it specifically mentions the following exemptions:

Elective Legacy EE to New EE migrations
Elective Plusnet to EE migrations
Forced migrations across all brands

This is alongside a few other more specific examples such as Home Essentials plans and certain promotional deals.

Based on these details, my understanding is that if a customer chooses to move from Plusnet to BT, the activation fee would still apply.

If there are any further stipulations around this and things change though, I'll be sure to come back and update this thread.

@shakey1981 From what I see at my end, it would apply.

You would only be exempt here if you were on a legacy EE contract, which featured different provisioning and billing systems, or migrating from Plusnet.

If you were staying with EE for the move to FTTC, this would count as a regrade so also therefore not receive the charge.

awee ok fine when full fibre goes live here i will likely move to anther provider then that hasent adopted this yet

Yes see @Peter_W reply to me only does not apply if you stay will With provder you are currently on within the bt group if you are on BT and move to EE the £30 charge will apply even tho they are all owned by BT as this counts as moving to a diffrent isp

i wish id moved to EE while im still on part fibre now

Just keep an eye on deals. It will only be a matter of time before BT Group ISPs start loudly proclaiming "No setup fees!" on "special" deals. It's all just marketing smoke & mirrors.

They won't start doing any of that until all the other ISPs start charging set up fees. There would be no point doing it prior to that if all it does is bring them back into line with the other ISPs which is where they were before charging fees.

It is more likely that the other ISPs will start to charge set up fees now that BT are doing it.

Doesn't seem worth staying with EE - who would appear to be really struggling (intentionally or not) to serve home broadband only customers.

And since BT now consider me a new customer no point returning to BT when far cheaper deals for faster speed are out there.

After a lifetime as loyal BT customer.

If there are cheaper and faster deals there would have been no point in returning to BT even before they started charging set up fees, that is unless you prefer to pay more money for slower speeds to maintain your "lifetime loyalty" to BT.

I thought I was paying more money for more reliability, the speed isn't really an issue.
But time to move on
