Hotmail emails in Thunderbird not sending

I've not been able to send any hotmail emails through Thunderbird since I changed to BT. It was fine before.

Most of the time I'm getting Connection to server timeout outlook.office365.com messages too although I was getting them before I switched. Sometimes I don't get them but I'm not getting any emails through at the moment.

My emails work on my phone on outlook for Android, just not on my laptop with Windows 10.

Can you check you have the correct server settings

Thank you, I've just checked them and they all appear fine.

I'm using the default server:
smtp.office365.com - that's the option that's checked anyway. When I look in server settings it says it's using outlook.office365.com. So that's confusing!

Here's the message I get on timeout:
Sending of the message failed.
An error occurred while sending mail: Outgoing server (SMTP) error. The server responded: Timeout waiting for client input [LO2P123CA0030.GBRP123.PROD.OUTLOOK.COM].

If you are using a Microsoft Hotmail email account or as it is known now Outlook.com, you will need to use the Outlook.com server settings in Thunderbird for that account and not the BT email settings.

Regarding this paragraph on the first link you sent me, there's no box to check for "my server requires authentication":

To protect our email server from abuse by spammers, we also require all emails sent through our email service to have SMTP authentication.

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is an authentication process that identifies the origin of emails; it stops them being sent anonymously and therefore helps to combat spam
Enabling SMTP authentication is easy; you usually switch it on by ticking a box called "My server requires authentication" in your email program's settings. If you don't set up SMTP authentication, you'll get an error 530 failure message when trying to send email messages.

Ignore the link in message 2. Those setting are if you are using a BTMail email account not a Hotmail email account.

The settings you should be using are in the link in message 4.

I've just tried sending another email after resetting the changes I made, I'm now getting this message:

Sending of the message failed.
An error occurred while sending mail: Outgoing server (SMTP) error. The server responded: * OK The Microsoft Exchange IMAP4 service is ready. [TABPADQAUAAyADYANQBDAEEAMAAxADEANwAuAEcAQgBSAFAAMgA2ADUALgBQAFIATwBEAC4ATwBVAFQATABPAE8ASwAuAEMATwBNAA==].

Did you ensure that the other settings are correct

SMTP server name smtp-mail.outlook.com
SMTP port 587
SMTP encryption method STARTTLS

In Thunderbird go to the email account you are wanting to check then Tools > Account Settings > In the left hand column click on Outgoing Server (SMTP) and check what is listed and if need be change them .

If they are all correct as this is not a BT problem there is nothing further I can do to help so unless another forum member can assist you will need to seek assistance from either Thunderbird or Microsoft

Thanks again, I've found another area in thunderbird where I can use those settings. I've changed them - although it doesn't tell me what to name the server description so I tried both alternatives. Neither work.

I've not done anything differently except try to email again and it has now sent and been received.

However, I've received this message to say that it didn't send:
Sending of the message failed.
An error occurred while sending mail: Outgoing server (SMTP) error. The server responded: Timeout waiting for client input [LO4P123CA0147.GBRP123.PROD.OUTLOOK.COM].

I'm guessing I'll try Thunderbird but at least I have outgoing emails again. Thanks a million!

The description names of both servers in Thunderbird needs to be the same as the incoming and outgoing server names.

Click on server settings and you'll see one lot of settings - these should be:
IMAP server name outlook.office365.com
IMAP port 993
IMAP encryption method TLS

Once done, go to the scroll function on the left hand side and scroll all the way down to Outgoing Server SMTP.
Click on edit server and use these settings:
SMTP server name smtp-mail.outlook.com
SMTP port 587
SMTP encryption method STARTTLS

If you're still getting a sent message failure, make sure that there is nothing in the outbox that could still be failing.
