Moving to France - Retaining BT email address

In a couple of years we'll be selling up in the UK and retiring to France. I know you can retain your BT internet email address for roughly £8 a month, however I did read somewhere that for free you can retain minimal functionality, is this correct?
If I do have to pay to retain my BT addresses then I have plenty of time to play with to start the laborious task of switching bank acc's etc to a GMail type of email address.
Appreciate your thoughts.
