Auto-deletion on Premium email

Can someone explain if and when emails are auto-deleted from the trash folder? Are there nay settings that can be adjusted to control it?

There are no settings to adjust within the BT webmail. Any mail clients you are using may,however, have adjustable settings.

I really can't get my head around using the trash folder as a storage folder.

If you don't want an email, delete it. If you want to keep it, file it. If you are not sure, put it in a pending folder.

Do you rummage in your dustbin for items you have thrown out?

You may have misunderstood my question: I was not intending to use my Trash folder for storage. My question was prompted because all my emails in Trash older than about two weeks have disappeared - I was simply trying to understand why.
