Can only access one email address through BT.com

I have two btinternet.com email addresses. The website will no longer switch between them, I have to log out of the one I'm using (address A) and try to log in to the other one (address B). However...the system automatically logs me back into address A - even if I try to rapidly delete address A detail to log on with address B, it still takes me to address A.

It is important that I can access both through BT.com rather than my normal client, Thunderbird, as BT has its own spam filter, not always accurate. I need to review what is in the spam folder - and I can only do this for address A, because of the problem above.

I have tried clearing History to remove cookies, but that has made no difference.

Any advice? Maybe there is another way to see the spam folder? Or a cache that I need to clear?

Thanks

DavidMed

There was a change a while back that stopped you logging onto one BTMail account then while there using a drop down box to access your other email accounts.

As regards you getting logged into the wrong email account. It sounds like it is your web browser causing that problem. Your web browser will be storing the username and password for both email accounts and auto adding it to the username and password boxes when you try to log on.

Depending on which browser you use it will either offer a drop down box to allow you to select the email account you want or it will autofill the details.

Obviously if it is offering a drop down box with the email addresses you just select the one you want.

If it is auto filling the email address, you just need to overtype it with the address that you want and it should automatically change/select the one you want.

As has been pointed out, if you use Thunderbird as an IMAP account you can access both email addresses from T'bird and you will be able to see and access all your email folders including the spam folder.

Thanks, licqorice - I'll try that. ThBird is certainly POP3 at the moment. Seeing the spam folder in ThBird would be my preferred solution so fingers crossed.... David

Thanks gg30340 - as you will see from other replies, I'll try changing that configuration.

Regarding the BT log in, yes you are obviously correct in that there are drop down options and over-typing options, but, frustratingly, whatever I select or type, BT.com takes me to address A. I have tried clearing the cache no change. I agree it's probably my browser - I'll try from an Android device.

Thanks, DavidMed

Just download and install another browser. You can always uninstall it after you have tested to see if that is the problem.

Thanks to all who replied - you gave very helpful information. I have resolved my difficulty of not being able to view spam by logging on with my Android tablet. Everything worked as it should and it was fairly easy to switch between address A and address B by logging out and back in again. It does seem ridiculous that a straightforward switch is not allowed by BT, though the option still appears on the drop down menu.

I also tried logging on using Microsoft Edge, but I still had the same problem as with Chrome.

And, for those who suggested it, I will convert my Thunderbird account to IMAP, but I haven't done so yet as it was quicker to try the browser changes.

Finally - yes, there was an important (useful) email in the Spam folder. The sender is now in my 'safe sender' list.

DavidMed

Are you referring to the drop down menu where you log onto your BTMail account as per this link BTMail which if you are it is your browser, not BT that is storing that information.

Or is it once you have logged onto your email account, you click on your username at the righthand side and a drop down box appears and it has "Switch Account"?

If you do mean that do you not get a message telling you that you need to log out and then log into the other account?

Hello gg30040

If I follow the link in your message, it takes me to BT.com, with 'Email' as a menu bar option. If I select that option, it takes me straight into one of my email accounts (address A) with no options, so yes, probably the browser (Chrome) is responsible.

If I then click on the account name at top right, I do get a drop down menu with several options, including 'Switch user' and 'Sign out'. Switch user just tells me that I can't switch, I have to sign out and log in again. When I do sign out and log in, the screen will not accept my address B. I can type address B into the field, but it just takes me back into address A. Groundhog Day.... This also seems likely to be the browser but, as I noted in comments above, I have cleared history and the cache - no change. And I tried Microsoft Edge (which I have by default and never use for anything) and have the same situation. (So is it really the browser?)

This is not a new problem for me, I think it goes back to the option to switch addresses being removed. I'm using Windows 11, but I think it was also there under Windows 10.

I started this thread in case other BT email users had the same problem, or at least an answer to *my* problem.

Thank you for your efforts!

DavidMed

When setting up Edge and Chrome, which are basically the same type of browser, you can import bookmarks passwords etc from one to the other so this may account for then behaving in the same way.

When you finish checking your email account, are you logging out of the account or just closing the web page?

Are you logging onto your MyBT prior to using the BTMail button to log on?

Do you log out of MyBT when you are finished using it?

When you get to the BTMail log on page BTMail are you entering your log on details or are they prefiled in?

What happens if you click on the username box? Do you then get a drop down box.

Have tried going into your browsers settings in Chrome and Microsoft Edge and when in the settings go to "Passwords" then scroll down the list until you find "BT.Com.

It will show a number which indicates how many BT.Com passwords are stored by the browser. Click on it and this will then show all the BT.Com usernames and passwords that your browser has saved.

Scroll down until you find your email addresses. You can then click on them in turn and check the password that is recorded against each one by clicking on the small icon to the right of the password.

Check that each email account has the correct password and preferably they should not all be the same.

You can now edit them or I would suggest that you delete the email address and password from the list. It does not delete the email account only the stored username and password.

If you do that you will then be given the option to "re-save" the email logon details the next time you log on should you wish to do that.
