Left BT - need email deleting, not so easy it seems

I left BT August 2024, and after settling my bills (which BT agree have been paid) I asked for my accounts and data to be deleted. After much back and forth with the BT Privacy team I've had my online account deleted - the one I used to access MyBT. So that's half the battle

What seems more problematic is - when I tried to delete my email address, it said that wasn't possible. The address was linked to my BT ID, and this was before I had My BT account deleted. The steps on this guide did not work for me: https://www.bt.com/help/email/manage-email-account/how-do-i-close-or-delete-an-email-account-

I then went through customer services and asked the Privacy team to delete my email and they've had two goes at doing that. Last message from them was on 26/05/25 saying it had been deleted with immediate effect.

However, I can still log into it as of 28/05/25. So, not with immediate effect.

This is not an experience unique to BT. It does seem quite hard to thoroughly delete accounts with some providers. Harder than it should be.

Anyone got any suggestions? Thanks.

Do not keep logging onto the account. When you do that you are reactivating it.

Follow this procedure:-

To delete a BT Mail account, log into your MyBT account at www.bt.com/MyBT, then navigate to "Your products", select "Email", and choose "Manage". You can then select the email address to delete and confirm the deletion.

Steps to delete a BT Mail account:

Log in to MyBT: Go to www.bt.com/MyBT and sign in with your BT ID.
Access your products: Select "Your products" from the MyBT dashboard.
Manage your email: Scroll down and locate the "Email" tile. Select the "Manage" link.
Select the email address: Choose the specific BT Mail address you want to delete.
Confirm the deletion: You'll be prompted to confirm your choice, and you may be asked for your password.
Receive confirmation: You'll receive a confirmation email for the deletion.

Important points:

You can reactivate the deleted email address within 60 days.
After 60 days, the email address and its contents will be permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.
You can reuse the email address for up to 3 years after it has been permanently deleted.

Hi gg30340, I can no longer log into my MyBT account at bt.com/mybt, navigate to "Your products", select "Email", and choose "Manage" then select the email address to delete and confirm the deletion.

That account has been deleted and does not let me log in anymore, BUT even when it was active I followed the exact steps you describe and it would not let me delete the email account because it was tied to the BT ID.

Catch-22.

If you can not delete the email do as I suggested and do not access the email account.

Email accounts that are not used will be blocked after 90 days, and permanently deleted after 150 days.

Hi, I took your advice and have not accessed the email account since 30/10/25. It is not synced to any email client as I removed it from Outlook on 30/10/25 and I don't have it set up on my iPad.

I've tried to log into it today via web login (152 days later by my calculation) and it has been neither blocked nor deleted.

Why is it so hard to get an email account deleted?

Call BT 0330.1234.150 and ask for the BTMail Team and ask them to delete your email account.
