Extension phone on DV not ringing

Hi,

I recently changed to BT and Digital Voice (DV). My main phone which is connected to the hub supplied by BT (Smart Hub 2) works fine. However, I have an extension phone in another room which, although it works, never rings.

I set it up using the Digital Voice Adapter supplied and, when I pick it up, get the dialling tone. I can dial out on it. But when somebody calls me, the extension phone does not ring. Only the main phone rings. The extension phone is plugged into the adapter which is plugged in to the mains.

Is this to be expected or do I need to do something to get my extension phone to ring?

you could try using an old style filter if you have one from time used for broadband

Just so you're aware, from what I've seen posted before, not all mircofilters will solve this problem. It appears only some do.

Sorry, can't give you any clarification on how you tell the difference.

The issue, as I understand it, is that old* phones need the 3rd "bell" wire connected. This wire actually taps off from one of the two main wires and some filters simulate this, so I suggest you look for one with three pins connected.

Whether the product descriptions will be up to that I don't know. (In my experience as an IT tech, Amazon IT product descriptions are often inaccurate to the point of being comical).

*I'll also point out, because it's not been made clear, but this issue only applies to old phones, so it might be worth waiting and seeing if your phone works without it.

Thanks again WSH. The phones are 7 years old, called BT Essential, a set of three, one in the hallway next to the hub, one in the bedroom and the other in the living room. I always carry one around with me in the garage and garden etc.and it has always rung when I have had a call. Now it doesn't since the change over. I'm not very mobile and that is the reason I carry it around as I can't get to the phone quickly. I changed the batteries last week as the others were the originals.

I recall the scenario @WSH described, but I can only remember one incident, so I think you'd be unlucky to pick one that doesn't work. But having said that, I wouldn't have thought those phones would be an issue. I guess the only way to find out is to try one.

If you're on Facebook, maybe ask locally if someone has one spare, there's probably dozens lurking in drawers. Or if you want to message me your address, I'll pop a new one in the post. I can't guarantee it will work but won't cost you anything to find out.

Thank you CL licquorice for looking after me, I admit I was a little wary about showing my name and address.As I have said before I am 91 and not sure about using these forums. I don't know your extension set up but when I got BT full fibre with Digital Voice I connected the phone socket on the BT hub to the redundant Openreach master copper landline socket which fed all the extension points in the house & every phone worked & rang.

rbz5416 Thanks for your reply and kind offer. You will probably have seen the later post about my posting my home address which was deleted, I realize that was the right thing to do. I am not clued up with this social media protocol. I am impressed with the help given to me by yourself and others on the forum. Thanks again.
