Moved to DV & Updated to FTTP

Just been moved over to DV and had Broadband updated to FTTP by BT yesterday. As part of change a router (BT Smart Hub 2) was supplied and to my shock after connecting up my devices to this Hub, I decided to check Hub Manager to make sure all my devices had connected and discovered “previous devices listed” used on this Hub. (See attached). I’m not impressed that BT have supplied me with another customers previous Hub, is this the BT “New” norm, any comments appreciated.

Just factory reset it.

You don't own the hub in any case, it still belongs to BT.

BT recycle all loaned items that are returned, and will send them out again. Remember your are not paying for the home hub, you are only borrowing it, which is why you would be charged if you do not return it when requested.

You would not expect a new item.

This is my first alt Hub from BT since my BT Home Hub 5 I’ve had for many many years now.

You would of thought BT would have put it back to original factory reset before sending to another customer.

I’m aware we no longer own the hub now, just loaned from BT.

More interesting is the possible security implications for the previous owner.

Where exactly do you see a security threat? MAC addresses?

Yes and it also lists device names. Admittedly, it's a long shot that anyone could make practical use of the info but it is still bad practice to be sending out devices without clearing them first.

And if you load Google Maps, it may even show the location the hub was last recorded.

Hi All,

Just an update to say I’ve now removed the previous devices named above (Bay2-Master, Bay2-Master, Slave-Bay2 & Kingston DataTraveler 3.0) records from the My Network area on the Hub.

The only devices names now listed are my own 5 which had been connect on my original BT home Hub5.

Question : Should I need check for anything else which might have not been remove from this BT Smart Hub 2 that BT supplied to me ??

A factory reset would have been a better option, as that is the only way to clear the DHCP table.

@Keith_Beddoe - Noted, If I do a factory reset now would that affect anything on the phone (DV) connection to HUB.

It will delete any contacts you have entered in the phone, however, the contact list can be backed up before resetting and restored afterwards. It will also require the DV handset to be registered to the hub again.

@licquorice - Thanks for your reply, noted info appreciated. Will think it over now, nothing straight forward now with BT recycled Hub / power supply cable supplied no booklet manual etc for unit.

You don't need a manual, there is very little configuration you can do with the Hub and the menu options are straightforward and intuitive.

This is interesting. I've just connected up the Smart Hub 2 in anticipation of DV next week. (Sad to see myTP Link VR400 go, it's been great) I have exactly the same devices appearing as @clique-al in my list. Could this be equipment they use for testing refurb hubs?

if that does not mean anything to you then I would factory reset the hub by pressing the recessed button on the back of hub and hold for 20/30 secs until hub lights flash then reboot hub and should be completely clear

if you have a lot of wifi devices I would change the hub SSID to that of your tplink and also use the existing wireless password and that way your wifi devices will connect as if there had been no change

@imjolly Thanks for that. I have just Factory Reset the Hub and it is now completely clear. Whatever the reason these devices were there it now makes it easier to keep a track of all the devices that should be there.
