BT8600 remote access to voicemail

I have set up a PIN for remote access to a BT8600 voicemail and information on the internet indicates that the way to access voicemail messages from a remote phone is to dial the BT8600 number and wait for the voicemail greeting to start. Then to press the * key to interrupt and enter in the PIN code, and follow the voice prompts to listen to, save or delete the voicemail message. the greeting.

However, when I press the * key (or the hash (#) key) at the greeting, it does nothing - the greeting just continues. Any advice would be welcomed.
