Any phone that worked when plugged into the BT analogue wall socket will work just fine when plugged into the green DV socket on the BT Smarthub 2. There is no special requirement for "DV phones"
The adapter that BT supply/sell is used when you want your phone to be located some distance from the SH2 so you can't plug it into the hub. It's just a portable phone socket and can be used anywhere in the house that has a mains electricity socket.

probably easier and I would think better to get a phone with the facilities that you want which will be fine either connected to the hub or an adapter
