As I said I have a smart hub 2 which is connected to fullfibre. I have been paying for full fibre and getting full fibre speeds of up to 1Gbs. The BT engineer installed the full fibre connections before I had the router to connect to it and this removed the copper connection to my previous router. The engineer installed the mains powered box and left the relevant cables and instructions on how to connect the router once it arrived. So I do have both fibre and copper which I understand is the usual process. I have just come off the telephone with the BT technical team and discovered that my hub manager will only show a telephone number once a phone is connected to it. The digital voice facility starts the moment that the full fibre is connected, but it only activates once the phone is transfered to the router and it will then show the phone number.

I have been on full fibre for the past 2 years and have a smart hub2. I keep getting a reminder that digital voice is coming. How will I know it has come? Will it be when my phone stops working.

But my phone is still working on the old wall socket and I haven’t had any communication telling me to move it to the router. Which incidentally I can’t do because the router is remote from my phone.

Weird, so you have a copper line and a fibre line?

As @WSH says, your hub will display your phone number when DV is enabled.

If you don't want to plug your phone into the hub, you can use a DV adapter which is simply a portable phone socket that just plugs into any mains socket.

Why didn’t you question this two years ago ? , there were occasions where the copper pair remained for the telephony service when FTTP was installed, but that was much longer ago than two years ago….what services were originally on that copper pair , telephone and broadband (with just the telephone remaining after FTTP was installed) or was it only ever a ‘phone line’ and the FTTP was ordered as a standalone broadband service ?

There is clearly something non standard about your situation, as a migration from ADSL/VDSL only two years ago wouldn’t have kept the copper pair in use for telephony

I originally had a fibre to copper broadband together with my landline. This was changed in November 23 to full fibre broadband when because BT had failed to send me the smarthub2 meant that I lost my internet service for two days but my phone remained useable. When the hub arrived I just connected it to the new interface box and my PC and continued to use the phone as it was. Since then I've been receiving notifications that Digital voice is coming, no mention that its already there. In fact the engineer who fitted the fibre connection said BT would be in contact when it was ready to be changed to digital voice. Because I had a problem a couple of weeks ago I started to wonder whether my digital voice was enabled and I hadn't been told about it. Hence my question. This now raises doubt in my mind that at some stage the copper service will disapper and the first I will know about it is when my phone no longer works.

Do you have an ONT or not , that being a mains powered box that the router is connected to , or does your router still connect to the ordinary telephone socket , if you don’t have an ONT , then as others have speculated you don’t have FTTP , hence the confusion.

If you do have FTTP (so you have an ONT ) then as previously posted , it’s odd that you have your broadband on FTTP and your telephone on copper , this should have been addressed at the time , November 2023 , when once FTTP was provided the copper pair service should have ceased.

As far as what will happen , as you are not working in any standard way it’s impossible to predict, your copper pair PSTN telephone service may cease and the number be transferred to the FTTP broadband service on Digital Voice , ( that’s what should have happened 2 years ago , a migration to DV ) , or some other method used to get what presumably is now a PSTN phone only service on the copper pair off the PSTN network, it remains unfathomable how the late delivery of a router put you in this situation,

I’d suggest rather than asking here (no one can possibly provide anything other than a ‘educated’ guess ) is call BT and ask or wait until something happens

So, the answer then is to order one of the DV adapters, pair it with the hub, plug the phone in and see what happens. It sounds as though you’ll need an adapter eventually, anyway.

(If memory serves, mine did take an hour or two to appear after the switch to full fibre, so it might be worth leaving it overnight).

The phone on copper and broadband on FTTP is not the usual process, but if what you are told is true , connect a phone to the router telephone port , either your existing phone (regardless of it not being in an ideal location ) or a ‘spare’ phone , this supposedly ( from what you say ) will ‘trigger’ the migration from copper pair to DV …TBH there may be a scintilla of truth in that , when I migrated to DV on FTTC (so no FTTP complications) I never connected a phone on the day I was advised the migration was to take place , and received a couple of emails subsequently in the following days saying ‘ you haven’t connected a phone yet’ , once I did so , DV worked , however I never checked if it were showing as configured or not on the SH2 .

Seems pretty obvious what to do really, give it a try , especially if you have a second corded phone , you won’t even jeopardise your current phone service if you do .

You can get a cheap plug-in phone from the supermarket for under a tenner. (I’ve always kept one as a backup, before DV, as I’ve used cordless phones for years. In fact, when I was switched, I left that plugged into the Smart Hub and my cordless in the wall socket until everything was sorted. Didn't seem to stop the change going through but I was still on FTTC at the time).

Just a quick update. The digital voice adapter arrived today and as I originally thought failed to work. After further long telecons with BT/EE I was informed that digital voice is not enabled on my line. I have had to be migrated from BT to EE to enable the digital voice facility to be enabled on my line. BT are becoming more centred on business customers and EE dealing with domestic ones. I was informed that all BT’s domestic customers will be transferred to EE by the end of 2027.

Hmm... that indeed used to be BT's policy - to concentrate on business users.
But the new BT/EE CEO has reportedly reversed this policy and said that no existing BT broadband and landline customer will be forced to migrate to EE.
So I think what you were told by the telephone agent was wrong (an all to frequent occurence according to posts on this Forum).
There is absolutely no technical reason that you have to move to EE to get digital voice - plenty of BT customers have DV.

Digital voice adapters just allow a corded phone to ‘communicate’ via DECT to the SH2 basestation and has absolutely nothing to do with the implementation of DV , although clearly it can’t work before DV is activated, you certainly don’t need to be on EE for DV and it’s now inaccurate to state BT is to become a business only provider and all BT residential customers are to be migrated to EE , that policy was dropped months ago when BT senior management was changed , the new team decided that the BT brand should be maintained for residential customers although anecdotally there is still a ‘soft’ push of BT customers towards EE , there is no deadline in 2027 to get BT customers onto EE , Jan 2027 is the retirement of the PSTN telephone service.
