I’m trying to set up Call Protect for my elderly parents, who have previously been scammed. When setting up an account PIN (which I believe is required to access the Call Protect options), I get an error message saying “We seem to have a technical issue”, so I can't proceed.

I also receive the same error when trying to amend basic account details on the Enter your details page. Live chat was unable to help.

Any help would be appreciated.

Call protect won't stop scammers. The numbers are spoofed and they have a virtually infinite amount of numbers to use. As fast as you block one number, they will use another.

THe only way to stop scammers is by using a whitelisting type phone so callers not in the allowed list have to announce themselves which scammers never do.

You are not reporting an error message, you are posting on a customer to customer forum. You will need to speak to
0330 1234 150 to resolve, nobody here can assist.

As previously stated, call protect won't help.

Today I've tried to help my elderly parents, who have historically lost £317,000 to investment fraud, by setting up Call Protect. In doing so, I've encountered three errors on the website when trying to 1. amend basic account contact data, 2. create a PIN for Call Protect and 3. submit a persistent German number via the scam reporting tool. All gave error messages. I've also failed when trying to find an email address to send screenshots to tech support, and I've contacted chat support "guides" who couldn't grasp what I was trying to report, so I had to end the conversation.

If you can, please forward this thread to BT complaints for me, as I'm guessing that would also fail.

All the best.

Edit: I was bang on, the complaints button links back to the BT homepage. Please leave this forum post live as I'll be going to the Ombudsman. I'll screencap it anyway.

But you are missing the point that you can't block an infinite amount of numbers.

Please listen and understand that call protect will not help. The only way to stop the calls is whitelisting.

Call blocking will not stop scammers.

To block a call you first need to know the number that you want to block. That means the call first of all has to get through to the recipient in this case your parents so that they can block that number.

It is a pointless endeavour trying to block scammers because they use spoofed phone numbers and they also use an infinite number of computer generated numbers which they use via an auto dialler so as to avoid call blockers which can not possibly block all the computer generated numbers which in many instances are only used few time by the scammers.

As has already been pointed out you need to get a phone that will only allow "white listed" calls through. You control what the numbers are that get "white listed" such as those in your known phone contacts Family, Doctors, Banks etc and all other calls get blocked until they announce who they are.

Scammers obviously do not want to announce who they are plus in most instances the scammers call is initiated by an automatic call dialler which only passes it onto the human scammer after it has been answered by a human and in this instance it would be an automated answer requesting that they state who they are by which point the scammer or the automated dialler will just hang up.

You or rather your parents need a phone that can white list callers, not a call blocking system
