PSTN switch-off

When I moved to my present house it already had FTTP provided by Gigaclear and I’ve stayed with them since. No problems there but it’s a rural area and there isn’t a reliable mobile signal indoors so I also had a BT landline put in for emergency backup when power cuts occur. This uses the existing copper network.

The PSTN will be switched off soon so I’m wondering about my options. Any thoughts please?

Hopefully you are not in receipt of the no broadband discount on your BT landline only service, and you should be paying around £32 if it’s on a PAYG basis, you won’t qualify for the reduced price as you have broadband from another provider …..

your telephone only line will be converted to a PDPL , a Pre Digital Phone Line , the work is done entirely within the exchange , disconnecting you from the PSTN exchange and connecting you onto a transitional phone service, it’s not Digital Voice but can be considered similar , although it’s not as fully featured as DV , nothing changes in your home, same sockets , same telephone instrument ( so no main power outage issues unless you have a mains powered phone ).

if you currently can use short codes to call local numbers you need to dial the full national number ( so using the STD code even on local calls ) but many areas had to do that on PSTN anyway .
