All calls from my landline result in an engaged tone including calls to my cellphone. Any ideas?

Do BT Retail provide your phone service?

If they do, then dial 17070 and make sure the number that is read back to you, matches your home phone number, jus in case you have a crossed line.

Was the number read back to you the correct number?

Are you on BT Digital Voice?

It turns out that the problem was a fault in the local exchange.
