landline not working

my landline isnt working. if i ring out on it i get engaged tone, if i ring my landline from my mobile it is blank for couple seconds then call ends. i tried bt trouble shooter and say cant find fault but obviously there is one. broadband working fine, landline phone fully charged and has dialling tone. please help
