I've been reading about the new Digital voice and seems that you will need to connect your landline phone to your new router. My router is in my 3rd bedroom (office) next to my computer. There isn't a phone in this room, nor do I want one to be. My landline cordless phone is downstairs in the lounge and there's a second handset in my main bedroom. So, how is this going to work?

Hi. You'll receive a card about a month before the switchover inviting you to request a free adaptor. This plugs into a mains electric socket close to your phone. Then, you press a button to pair this to your router. On switchover day, you plug the BT cable from your phone into a socket on the adaptor and that's it - all done.

If the second handset in your bedroom is a cordless one for which the one in the lounge is the main "base" unit, you don't need to do anything unusual to that one - it will communicate with the hub via the one in the lounge.

An alternative to the DVA would be to see if you can buy a spare charging base for the phones. That way you can keep the base plugged into the SH2 but have the handset downstairs.

Many thanks. Where my phone is in the lounge it plugs into one single electric socket (its not a double) which is next to a BT master socket (not a plug as such socket). Is this sufficient, or will I need to buy one of those plugs that you can put more than one thing into?

DVA is Digital Voice Adapter, effectively a portable phone socket that just needs a mains socket.

SH2 Smart Hub2

Did you read the FAQ?

Hi. You'd need two electrical sockets then - one for the phone to plug into, and one for the adapter (DVA = Digital Voice Adapter) to plug into. If you don't have two sockets close to the phone I suggest you buy a mains extension lead - perhaps one of those with four sockets on - and plug that into the wall, then your phone and the adapter into the extension. Then, on switchover day, unplug the BT wire from the wall socket and into the box on the adapter.

Hope this helps.

Alternative is also that you pair the Dect phones with the SH2 and use the original base station only as a charging station.

SH2 is using standard DECT and with all DECT phones, as far as I am aware, can be paired with any other base station (including SH2).

I did try this not long back and it worked just fine.

You just remove the ‘phone’ cable from the base and discard it as it won’t need to be plugged into anything if your cordless phone is paired with the SH2.

I don’t see this option talked about much but as I said, I did test it and it worked.

Which would put it on par with plugging it into the back of the SH2, except the OP can’t do that so DECT pairing would be a viable alternative.

The HD handsets from BT meant for this are best obviously. I have these which enable all features.

We get connected to BT full fibre + digital voice in a couple of weeks.

The master socket is in an understairs cupboard & the house has a telephone socket in most of the rooms.

We do, however, use 5 DECT phones & the base station is connected to the hall socket.

But we also have a couple of corded phones for the odd occasion when we get the "your call is important to us, we will answer it as soon as possible--BEEP-- you are number125 in the queue" message & we know that the cordless phone battery won't last that long.

It won't be an easy job for the OR engineer to install the ONT where the master socket is so I'm going to make it a very easy job for him / her by having the ONT located on the wall where the fibre cable will enter the house from the external ducting used by our current copper line which will be adjacent to a couple of power sockets.

In return I'll ask him / her to leave the master socket in situ & then use a telephone patch cord to connect the router to the master socket which will then feed all the telephone sockets which will leave the base station & corded phones in situ.

Anyway, that's my plan.
