Battery error

Hi, I have an DV Essential Digital Home Phone and it suddenly showed on the display Battery error remove battery. No problem I thought and ordered new batteries for the handset, but no matter what batteries I insert the same message appears on the screen and there doesn’t seem to be any way to clear it. Is it time to send this phone to the kitchen drawn of doom or is there some way to claw it back from the brink?
