The manual suggests that if the other handsets registered without asking for a PIN, then the PIN was 0000. So could you have changed it accidentally?

Unfortunately BT don't generally put physical reset options on the phones & rely wholly on software.

The only other thing I can think of is that being used, the base now has it's limit of five handsets registered, & that's why it won't allow your 4th. Handsets are assigned numbers, so what number does the last one successfully registered show? If it's five then you may have to reset the base station using on of the registered handsets. But if the PIN has been changed your only option is brute force, or buy another one!

A huge local storm blew my BT4500 Big Button base unit 2 weeks ago

I've bought a used replacement base for a tenner, and successfully registered THREE of my four handsets.
The 4th handset asks for the system PIN, and 0000 doesn't work.

Is there a way to force the out of box wizard to run and give me the 0000 back?
I'm even willing to take the back off, as I've only spent a tenner

Spilly (aka Scrooge)

PS I'm reluctant to buy a new set of analogue phones with digital due here "soon" (LOL)

Can't help with the pin but analogue phones will work just fine when you are moved to Digital Voice. The BT hub has a built in ATA that you simply plug the base station into in exactly the same way as plugging into a master socket.

I don't know about this particular model but I do seem to recall on some models that resetting the base unit allows the pins on the handsets to reset.
