BT Internet security Public/Private - phone call to change it

Just had a phone call from a James Cook, BT, on 02031849560 to talk to me about my internet security because my BT Internet line is apparently set at Public and not Private. Not sure if this is the case because my BT router is set to Private and not Public. I am not very technical, but it seems as if he will want me to do some changes, eventually. I put him off and he is calling me again on Monday 27th June . He did not know the local GMT time and it sounded as if he was calling from abroad. Does anyone know if this could be genuine? Is there a difference between my internet line being Public/Private and my Router settings? Many thanks.
