We are a business in a small town in Cornwall. We live in a house behind our business at the same postcode. The copper wiring is the only option to us, 2 small businesses next door and 3 further residential addresses - all located between the 2 car dealerships that have the private line.

I know that the car dealership has a private fibre connection as initially BT said we could have fibre but then they realised it is a private fibre line. At which point they said we would have to pay.

My argument is why have we and the other properties been the only to be excluded in the past fibre installation on the street of 140 properties (mix of business and residential), with no plans to install fibre.

I'm looking for an idea on how and who I need to speak to to get my point across, as it feels like our properties have been excluded.

Fibre not available but private lines installed

BT are saying that our business can only have fibre if we pay for a £250 private lease. However a private line was installed for the car dealership located either side. Having researched the fibre availability in the area, I can see that the vast majority of properties and businesses in the street (over 5 different postcodes) all have fibre.

It seems a strange coincidence that the properties between the commercial businesses that use a private line have no fibre and there is no plans to connect them to fibre.

We are unable to update our PCs due to the poor copper connection and to be frank, why should we all pay for a private line to be installed at an inflated rental cost? The pole connecting ours and the other properties is just 10 foot away.

Any help/ advice on how to tackle gratefully appreciated.

Anyone can have an Ethernet leased line , it’s normally business as they can be expensive compared to FTTP , if the car dealership either side of you can order FTTP as well as Ethernet leased lines , then ordering FTTP is an address based system, so presumably their address has FTTP availability on the appropriate checker sites , and presumably you think your business address as it’s a neighbouring address should have FTTP availability as well , I assume it’s a business that your enquiry is about given this statement, ‘seems a strange coincidence that the properties between the commercial businesses that use a private line have no fibre and there is no plans to connect them to fibre’ or are you residential customer, if a residential customer presumably your residential address is contained within a business area , perhaps you can clarify what you are , a business or residential customer.

Business addresses can be difficult to match , if a car dealership is next to you it’s likely it’s not known with a ‘normal’ format address like , No.1 Coronation Street , but something like Billy’s Bargain Bangers Coronation Street , so how do you know they have native FTTP ?

Use this checker site for your address and the neighbour address that you state can get FTTP

https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL

you can search using a postal address or UPRN , post the entire return

It may be that the business has an "FTTP on Demand" line. This is a bespoke product which the install costs are met by the customer.
