Where can I send a copy of a BT LETTER that I received with a correct name Name Heading, but incorrect address, the correct address of my Accountants that I Use, that was forwarded to me.

It looks very genuine, stating a Billing Account Account Number, an account that we don't recognise, to which it refers. But when I contacted BT, the lady on the phone, which obviously was not in UK, she said she could not help me !!

Letter Heading Subject Is: We've cancelled your Dircect Debit

Is there someone in BT I can post the letter too and tell me whats the letter about, or is it a scam letter.

If it's real, what's it all about !!??

The obvious response is, has your direct debit been cancelled? Have you actually checked to see if it has been cancelled with your bank?

If your direct debit hasn't been cancelled, I'd just bin the letter, but that's what I'd do. Too much faffing around trying to send the letter back to BT. Or, if there's a return address on the letter, just repost it as return to sender assuming you haven't binned the envelope.

I wouldn't bin the letter, I'd shred it. Never throw away ANYTHING that has you name, address, account numbers or anything else that might link to you, on it!

For a start keep the letter as it may be the start of a lot of other identity theft and you need to keep the evidence and dates of receipt. Secondly, when I get something like that - got one for the previous owner of my house from the NHS who sold us the house in 1997 !!!! last week I post it back to the address given for incorrect receipts so they can correct their records and investigate if there is fraud going on. You can probably find a BT postal address online or on your bill and I would send it special delivery with a letter and keep a copy.

The OP hasn't even bothered to respond to any posts and I'm suspecting this might be something to do with a business anyway. It wouldn't surprise me if it was a scam letter but the OP's post is a bit vague to be honest. Quite frankly, it's their business to sort out. There's literally only so much advice you can give sitting in an armchair without seeing the offending letter.

When I said 'bin the letter', I think that was taken just a bit too literally. Those of us with any common sense whatsoever, do shred anything with personal details on it, that or do a controlled burn. We, my other half and I, necessarily have to have a minimum P5 shredder because of what we dispose of working from home.

"Those of us with any common sense whatsoever, do shred anything with personal details on it"

But it's amazing how many people DO just throw away packaging with their name and address on it. Councils routinely use this to catch people who use the "wrong bin" for particular waste and to catch fly-tippers.

Thanks for getting in touch and highlighting this, I can imagine it's worrying when you get a letter with incorrect details on it.

I'd recommend giving us a call so a guide can check to see if we've recently sent out any communication, and check if your direct debit is set up.

If you believe the email may not be genuine, you can take a picture or scan the letter and then send it in an email to our phishing team at phishing@bt.com
