Junction boxes sounds horrible

Hi BT forum I don’t think it is normal but the big tall green boxes on the pavements sound like a hover . Normally they are silent . I believe they are called junction boxes

If it belongs to Openreach it’ll be a RDSLAM, Remote Digital Subscriber Line Analogue Multiplexer.

The Hoover you’re hearing is a Cooling Fan that keeps the Electronic Equipment inside from overheating.

It’s normal for them to come on, even in the Winter when the ambient temperature is low.

The green roadside boxes are normally called "cabinets", not junction boxes. The latter term is normally used for the boxes used to connect domestic electricity wiring.

If it is a “BT” cabinet, and not Virgin or an altnet, it is actually the responsibility of Openreach, who are a separate company and nothing to do with this forum.

As has been said, they do have fans in them that can be heard from time to time but if you think it is something serious you could try here:
