I setup 2 of these at the weekend and had a couple of issues setting them up but managed to do it by doing the following.

Log into the hub and turn off the 5 ghz network, smart setup was already switched off.

Start the setup of the socket using the app on the phone, I did this using my iPhone, the lights on the socket flash red and the setup failed.

After the failure the app prompted me to setup the socket using the AP config, follow the prompts on the app about pressing the buttons on the socket then about switching off mobile data on your phone and then how to connect the phone to the socket and then connecting it to your hub.

All in all it was a bit of an effort connecting it to the BT hub, I have one in the garage that was setup with an external Wi-Fi extender and that connect first time without needing the AP setup, so perhaps they just have issues with the not so smart Smarthub?

The only option you don’t get using the AP config is to set any additional sockets as sub devices so they get configured as master units rather than a mesh setup.

Enjoy?

As was previously mentioned you don’t need to switch off the firewall you just need to switch off the 5ghz network on the Smarthub.

It might also be worth switching the Wi-Fi off on the iPhone and then back on again to make sure that it’s connected to the 2.4ghz network before you start the setup.

Did you also get to the point in the AP mode setup where the app prompts you to turn off the cellular data on your phone?

It might be worth switching this off as well before you try setting the switch up in AP mode.

As part of the setup you need to connect you phones Wi-Fi to the AP Wi-Fi that the socket is broadcasting have you checked to see if it’s listed under Wi-Fi devices and can you connect to it?

Here is what i have done

i have made up an extension lead with the BG socket at the end

i took the lead to work where we have the latest BT smart hub

i phoned BG tech department and with the socket plug in we tried to set it up together but failed every time

he think that they must be a setting in the router that is causing the issue

so i deleted the app and re-installed again

went back in to the home router and switched off the set up wizard and tuned off 5mhz then rebooked the router

tried again and failed )app is searching for device ap named bg home

This is the check list they sent me

Cannot set up device
1.
Please LED status:
Flashing rapidly- go to 2
Flashing slowly- go to 3
Turn off- go to 4
Flashing slowly intermittently- go to 5
2.
Please follow below steps to do trouble shooting：
1) make sure smart phone is connected with 2.4 GHz.
2) take smart phone, device and router close to each other
then try again to set up device
3) router’s Wi-Fi setting is b/g or bg mode
4) long press reset button for 4-5 seconds until LED flashing
4 times intermittently, which means device is in AP
mode then set up device
5) Ensure that no VPN is active on the smart phone/Handset
or the router.
3.
Please follow below steps to do trouble shooting：
1) No special characters or non-English characters are
included in the router SSID or password. We
recommend to use English characters and numeric , and
length should not exceed 32.
2) Disable blacklist, whitelist, MAC address binding, etc. in
router Wi-Fi settings. It is recommended to add
device MAC first then enable these settings but this may
cause device offline；
3) The distance between the router and the device should
not be too far.；
4) Make sure the router's 2.4G WiFi signal is on
5) Make sure the router has DHCP service enabled
6) If the router is connected to more than 30 devices, please
disconnect some devices then set up device
7) Following the instructions in App, reset the device to AP
mode (long press reset button for 4-5 seconds until
LED flashing 4 times intermittently) then set up device
😎 If the above methods still do not solve the problem, then
please try mobile phone hotspot as following：
a) Prepare two phones ；
b) Turn on "mobile hotspot" in the phone A, and set the
WiFi name and password
c) Connect phone B to the hotspot of phone A；
d) Open App and click on add device to see if it can be set
up；
e) If set up is successfully by above steps, but failed when
mobile phone is connected with router,
then try to restore the router to factory settings；
f) If tried steps a) to d) but still failed, then the equipment
may be faulty. It is recommended to contact the
seller to return this device.

Ps i have already exchange the socket

So we know that your phone can connect to the socket's SSID, so the socket seems to be ok.

You have disabled smart set up on the SH?

And under wifi settings on the hub, there are options to change wireless mode. Try going to option 2.

First thing to do was turn the router onto 2.4 GHZ then reboot the router the removed the 5ghz Wi-Fi connection on my phone and reconnected to the 2.4 GHZ on my phone.

I started the socket in AP mode then connected the WI-FI to the socket W-IFI.

I then went to the next stage in the app and looked for my home WI-FI which I could not see, I saw an item that said search hidden WI-FI and saw my home WI-FI so connected to that.

The socket finally was noticed by the app but this took several attempts. When it was connected then turned 5GHZ back on the router rebooted it and then reverted my phone back to 5GHZ.

This took me a whole afternoon to do I found it very long winded having to keep trying.

@23keith23 I genuinely have no idea why folks have such a problem with these smart BG sockets. I have fitted four of them myself in my own house and I have a couple of BG smart timers operating too.

The solution has indeed been posted within the thread but for the avoidance of doubt, download the BG smart app, disable 5ghz WiFi on the router to allow pairing and follow the instructions within the BG App and the accompanying instruction leaflet in the product box. None of it is rocket science. I had all of mine set up and running within 5 minutes of fitting. Then again, it might be an issue of where a router is placed, thickness of walls within the property and, dare I even mention it, the quality of the router being used.

As for you replying to a four year old thread, that need not happen if the threads were automatically closed after six months of inactivity. But that isn’t apparently possible on this forum.
