Using BT Smart Hub as second router for Digital Voice only

Hi, we're moving to FTTP and I have an established tri-band router with wired LAN throughout the house.

I still want to use this as my primary router, but will now have digital voice so I need to use the SH to connect the DV phones.

Below is what I think will work, plus the setup steps I need to take.

Will this work?

LAN/WAN Connection between Routers

Connect to the primary device (ASUS Router):

Connect WAN port to BT ONT
Set up router with PPPoE networking protocol. Save the change.
Login details are:
1. UID = bthomehub@btbroadband.com
2. PWD = bt
3. Save the changes
Check if it has DHCP server enabled (by default, it is usually enabled). If DHCP Server is disabled, enable it, and save the change.

For the secondary device (BT Smart Hub)

Pair Digital Voice Phones.
Go to the section Network / WAN and set the Connection Type as Static IP with an address in the range of the ASUS router (a fixed local address). Save the changes.
In the DHCP section, disable DHCP Server. Save the changes.
Disable wireless network. Save the changes.
Connect WAN port to one of the primary router’s LAN ports.

Nope, that won't work, the SH2 needs to be the first device connected to the ONT as has been posted countless times on the forum.

So, if I've got it right, my only option is, as I have to use DV, is to have the SH first, with everything turned off, save for the pairing of the phones, and the second router with a static address to the SH.

The other option is to use a 3rd party VOIP provider rather than DV, that will not require the SH2.

I use ONT -SH2- Negear Orbi Mesh in router mode.

all devices connected to Netgear.

Double natting but doesn’t cause me any problems. I am not a gamer.

Having BT as ISP, I'm experiencing the same issue... I recently upgraded to the 1 GB internet with BT, but their router is a WIFI 5 router, so it does not support gigabit wifi transfer speeds. I got a WIFI 6E router (TP-Link Archer AXE5400). It actually allows you to be configured as a WIFI access point as well. So I disabled WIFI on the BT SH and use the Archer as an access point. This seems to work ok. I'd be interested to hear from people if they think this may have any disadvantages... I.e., would using Archer as a router and using double natting be better in any way?
