OpenReach Fibre Modem

Hi All,

I’ve recently purchased a full fibre package from BT and have a question which will determine whether I need to cancel my contract or not.

I live in a new build and an open reach fibre modem was fitted before I moved in and is in a very inconvenient place (small cupboard under the stairs).

working remotely, I require multiple devices to be connected via Ethernet direct from the router.

can BT move where open reach installed my fibre modem and does anyone know the cost?

im getting conflicting information from customer services and they can’t get me an engineer out for 6 weeks past my start date in Jan (past my 2 week cancellation window).

Welcome to this user forum for BT Retail phone and broadband customers.

I assume the BT Home Hub is in the same place?

You can extend the connection between the modem and the home hub using a longer Ethernet cable, assuming there is not an Ethernet socket already in the cupboard.

The other option is to use a pair of powerline adapters to link the modem and the home hub.

Asking Openreach to move the modem, may not be practical, and could be expensive.

Yeah the BT Hub would need to go next to it.

unfortunately powerline adapters and traipsing Ethernet cables from one side of the house to the other isn’t an option.

Is it possible to relocated the Open Reach fibre modem? I can’t get in contact with anyone at open reach and BT can’t help until I’m officially a customer in January 23.

some advisors said £30 call out charge then someone else said £130 so it’s just conflicting. I don’t mind paying a couple of hundred.

A pair of powerline adapters have been used by other forum members.

As for moving the modem, I would not like to even guess the price, as it would depend on where the optical CSP is located.

I’m currently with virgin and I pay for Gig Download speed and get that direct from router but only about 50-75 mbps through Powerline adapters.

that’s why I don’t think that’s possible.

are you saying this?

open reach fibre modem > Powerline (via Ethernet) > Powerline (in my office) to BT Hub > BT Hub to my PC’s (via Ethernet)

Yes, you would be simply connecting the WAN side. It would of course depend on the capability of the PLAs and the mains wiring.

Are you sure that there isn't a patch panel hiding somewhere near the ONT? There often is with that kind of setup.

Powerline 100% out the window. Just tried another speed test and my ping is > 100ms and barely get 50mbps when I pay for 1GB

This is what I have pictured below. I’m not familiar with all the technical terms of direct fibre.

I just want this moved to my office on the opposite end of the house.

No I don’t have that unfortunately.

Would just need the Openreach box moved to my office if possible.

if this can’t be done, would need to cancel my package.

As this is just a customer to customer forum, nobody here will be able to give you an answer. You do have 14 days after your service is activated, to cancel.

Can you trace the fibre cable to where it enters the property via a CSP on the outside wall? If so it should be possible to resplice the cable & run it around the outside to the office.

But if the cable is buried with other services you may be out of luck.

New build ONTs are often done by the developer, so it may be worth contacting them to see if they can put you in touch with whoever did the work for them. Also to check how feasible it may be to run an ethernet cable invisibly through the property.

There is a little grey box next to a virgin box outside the property next to the front door. I’m guessing this is where it comes into the property underground then comes out in that cupboard.

Running cable around the house is a no go unfortunately. My girlfriend doesn’t want 40-50m of cable from one corner of the house to the other.

I just wish I could find out a definite answer if it can be moved and the cost of moving it.

As you have said it is a new build house, have you spoken to the developer to see if they can arrange to move Openreach modem for you due to the fact that placing a router in an understairs cupboard is one of the most stupid places to site one.

Hi @LHunter97 welcome to the community and thanks for posting. It is possible to order an ONT move after the service is activated. It currently costs £98.48 (subject to change) a maximum of 10m of internal cabling can be used but it's likely that the majority of the cabling will be run outside of your home.

Yeah I tried contacting them but said it was down to Open reach and unfortunately can’t get through to them.

Hi Neil,

does this 10m apply to outside as well? Because I’d imagine it would be between 20-30m to re-wire round the outside of the house to the upstairs office.

Hi @LHunter97 That's from the splice point so it sounds like it could be too far.

New internal location to be within 1 metre of 2 mains power sockets
Can include loft conversions subject to a move of up to 2 floors up or down from initial location
A maximum of 10 metres of internal cabling (can be a combination of CBT cable and internal cabling) from Demarcation Box or Customer Splice Point (CSP)
