Using BT Fibre FTTP with UniFi Security Gateway (USG) 3P (without BT Smart Hub)

Hi guys,

I'm currently with the ISP IDNet for Fibre-To-The-Premise (FTTP) and am shortly moving to BT Fibre FTTP, specifically Full Fibre 300.

Currently I connect the Enternet port from the white BT Openreach device, to the WAN port of the USG model 3P and then have configured a PPPoE username and password in the WAN network in my Unifi management console (see screen shot below).

Can I use BT Fibre 3000 without the supplied BT Smart Hub?

Is it simply a case of using my BT username and password in place of the current IDNet one?

Where do I find my BT PPoE username and password?

I'm hoping it is as simple as that, but would appreciate guidance on the questions.

Thank you licquorice. I had done some research and thought it would probably be OK, but last thing I wanted to happen was to get BT switched on and find I was searching around to get it working 🙂

Looks like the username and password are generic for all customers but I guess that is OK as it will only work to provide a connection via an FTTP connection for a specific device/line.

I'm enabled on Monday so hopefully all with be smooth enablement.

Yes, PPPoE authentication is against the individual line rather than username and password.

I have the same setup as in your picture. Didnt know it was called BT Openreach Box.

I plugged in the Ubiquiti USG and set up the PPoE with username: bthomehub@btbroadband.com
and password BT

But I cant seem to get onto the internet with this. Is there something obvious that I am missing?

@roslionIt's not called an BT Openreach box. It's an Openreach ONT.

@roslion it should work. You’ve probably already done all of this and therefore it won’t help but I’d

1. Swap back to the BT Smarthub (if you received the FTTP one) to make sure you’re getting the service.

2. Power cycle the ONT by powering it down for at least 5mins.

3. Connect the cable from the active port on the ONT to the WAN port of the USG

4. Use the common user name bthomehub@btbroadband.com and password (If required, but can be anything) BT In the USG setup with a PPPOE connection.

5. If it’s still not working I’d power cycle the USG.

6. Connect a computer to a lan port on the USG and retest

7. If you don’t have a smarthub you can try connecting a PC directly to the ont and setting up a new pppoe connection.

and on a good note, after doing the same thing about 8 times (factory reset and entering the ppoe username + pw it finally worked all of a sudden... no idea why but glad it did...

I also have a ubiquiti switch which seems to work but cant be adopted.

Anyone know what the options are for doing this if BT are also moving the telephone line to Digital Voice? My understanding is the BT Smart Hub serves as the VoIP ATA in that scenario.... 😞

If you want voice you will need to keep using the hub unfortunately, it acts as a DECT base station.

it tried using my own router on F900 but BT can not see the connection if there are any issues on the fibre, so ive connected my own wifi 6 router to the hub and switched off the bt wifi and firewall.

Hey! I wonder if you (or anyone else) can help me!

I just signed up for the 300 meg service, but I am struggling to get the USG handshaking with the Openreach Modem (ONT).

I have plugged the ONT into WAN1 port, and I have then edited my WAN settings to a connection type of "PPPoE" and provided a username of "bthomehub@btbroadband.com" with a password of "BT". VLAN is disabled, and I haven't set DNS servers.

When provisioning, the USG is stuck on "Getting Ready" - has been stuck there for 30 minutes and there is no internet access.

What have I done wrong?

I'm looking to make this switch but BT have moved us over to Digital Voice. I don't use the hub as a DECT unit but plug my own DECT unit into the dedicated phone port on the back of the HUB. Would the dedicated VOIP connection work for this or am I stuck with my BT hub?

If you wish to continue using DV, you will need to use the BT hub

The hub doesn't have a bridge mode, but if you search through the forum there are various ways to configure both devices to keep the hub in circuit.

Unplugged my 3rd party router from the ONT (left everything running)
I fired up the SM2, connected it to my ONT, waited for it to connect and then connected to it wirelessly with my laptop
I changed the IP address to 172.16.0.1
Changed my laptop to have a manual static IP address of 172.16.0.10
Disconnected and reconnected my laptop to the hub
Switched off the firewall
Switched off smart setup
Switched off UPnP
Switched off DHCP
Switched on the DMZ and selected my laptop (172.16.0.10)
Created a port forwarding rule for ports 1 to 65535 for TCP/UDP to 172.16.0.10
Changed my laptop back to obtaining its IP address via DHCP
Connected it to my 3rd party router wirelessly
Changed my 3rd party router to have a static IP address of 172.16.0.10 (rather than PPPoE)
Changed the gateway to 172.16.0.1
Changed the DNS to 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 (Google)
Plugged the WAN cable from the third party router into a LAN port on the SH2

So I bit the bullet and bought a Dream Machine Pro.

I unplugged the cable from the BT Hub to my Switch, plugged it into the WAN port on the Dream Machine and did exactly nothing, the Dream Machine recognised the connection and set itself up to work. All up and running in less than 5 minutes.

Cheers guys but it looks like Ubiquiti have added something that automates the process.
