Hello, I have BT fibre broadband but wireless latency is always high. My daughter likes to game on her Xbox series x with her friends but is unable to play wirelessly due to the high ping and I have tried everything the only solution is running a massive long ethernet cable across the floor. is there anyway to solve this ive had an engineer out he said it wasnt his problem and latency wasnt an issue i disagreed with him.

I appreciate any help at all.

It isn't his problem if you are using WiFi.

The only way to solve it is an Ethernet cable.

How high is the latency that you are experiencing?

HI.

my average is 12ms through ethernet and about 18 to 25 ms on wifi on FTTC. whats yours running at

So measuring latency we really need a reference point. Ideally, that would be the game server in question, but for now:

All IPv4 over Wifi:

Google 8.8.8.8 13ms

Cloudflare 1.1.1.1. 13ms

bbc.co.uk 15.101.81 14ms

Most gaming servers recon that latency to them of under 60ms is ideal - though the lower the better but you'll see trolls online talking about needing stupidly low latencies. When online gaming have you tried different servers, reducing the resolution, or reducing the detail level?

As I have my years worth of Game Pass Ultimate, I thought I've give Microsoft's cloud gaming a go and compare it to the other options:

Game Pass Cloud gaming: Some games run fine everytime, while others stutter lag and speed up. Visually there's A LOT of video compression going on. Apps not available on all devices, and on some forces you to use an XBox controller. 5/10

Amazon Luna: Haven't lost a frame yet, just a shame that the input lag is some games is horrendous. Video quality is an improvement though. Again apps are not available to all devices on all platforms. 5/10

Nvidia Geforce now: Obviously the elephant in the room is the cost of the ultimate service @ £18/month but I'd probably get away with the Priority service @£9/month. There are also almost no games you'll have heard of in the "free-to-play" category. But using a premium game that I've linked into it I saw no video lag, no input lag, and the video quality was the best I've seen since the demise of Stadia. While there aren't apps for everything, there it does seem that I have significantly more devices that are compatible with their apps. 7/10

*If Stadia were available I'd still give it 8/10.

The fact that different services have different issues suggests it may not all be down to our internet connection!
