Hi,

I have the same problem, did you ever make any more progress with this issue?

If I cable connect my laptop to a port in my router I get downloads speeds of around 285Mbps. In the room where I work, I get download speeds of around 35Mbps via my powerline adapter. If I switch to WiFi, my laptop defaults to the 2.4Ghz band & I get download speeds of around 15Mbps. Even in my tiny house the router automatically chooses this band due to the great distance from the router! On the older BT routers you could choose which devices used which band, but the only control you have on the latest router is to turn off one of the bands, to force the remaining band to be used.

I need the 2.4Ghz band to be active for one of my devices, but if I do turn this band off on my router, thus forcing my laptop to connect via 5Ghz, I get download speeds of around 44Mbps, via a much weaker (i.e. flaky) wireless signal.

I have come to the conclusion that for the vast majority of people, who don't have network cabling in their houses, only the devices that you can directly cable connect to the 3 free router ports get the full speed benefits of Full Fibre. If you are in the same room as the router, using a wireless connection via the 5Ghz band, you will also get improved download speeds, but in my testing, these speeds were around 100Mbps slower than from a direct cable connection.

I can only get 54mbps down 44 up with powerline adapter although the hub is rated at 947/111 using speedtester in BT app. I have checked the network adapter and it is set at Gigabit.

The powerlines are TP-Link dual band gigabit AC1200 powerline adapters. I would appreciate any solutions for improving speeds. I cannot run direct cabling.

Maybe try another pair of adaptors? Haven’t used any for a while but in my experience they gave a lot closer to full speed than what you seem to be getting. See if you can borrow any from friends or family to give it a try.

First of all powerline adapters never achieve their advertised speeds in the real world. Secondly, they are only as good as your electrical wiring

Make sure they're plugged directly into sockets & not into adapters or extensions.

Google reviews of the adapters you have for an idea of real world achievable speeds but they will be nowhere near the 900Mb of your connection.

Although I'm a little confused by you testing through the BT "app"? What device are you using to test with & how is it connected?

Both adaptors directly into sockets. Speed tester is in my bt app. I'm sure that there would be an appreciable speed drop but not from 900 to 50. One of the adaptors is new. And all ethernet cables as well.

My BT app on android phone it has a link to test router speed, it not entirely sure how but I'm assuming it logs into router and runs test of speed to the router, not what it delivers. I'm testing actual received speeds with the speedtest app on both moby and pc. On moby wifi standing next to router speed is @300 mbps, next to adaptors @60mbps. Pc via power line @55 mbps.

I would be happy with the likely achievable speeds as seen in techadvuser review but in a similar scenario eg Victorian house I am getting nowhere near the same speeds.

Have done when first set up, same speeds.

I'm not sure that the poor speed can be totally laid at powerlines, I connected a laptop directly to the router and could only get 100mbps but I couldn't change the ethernet adapter speed to gigabit. The laptop via WiFi is in the 300 range.

The powerline that achieves best speed is further away from router and on a different circuit.

I have logged into router management console and the gigabit ethernet ports appear to be set to 1000mbps.

Are all of your ethernet cables Cat 5e? Should be printed on the sleeve & you should be able to see all eight wires connected to the RJ45 connectors.

Does the laptop ethernet port definitely support 1Gb? If it does I'd start by trying to find two cables that will give you a 1Gb connection & then try those cables with the adapters.

I

I'd concentrate on getting a 1Gb connection direct to the router first. Goggle the laptop chipset & make sure it's 1Gb capable & update drivers. Or do you have a cable that will reach to the PC temporarily?

Reckon I'd need a 25 m cable to reach pc. The laptop in adapter properties, speed does not have a gigabit toggle it's got 10 and 100 various duplex options and automatic. I'm not sure if it's capable of updateable.

Unfortunately the transmission characteristics of your home wiring will be constantly changing, as electrical devices are turned on and off, so its not possible to measure anything.

The fact that Powerline devices work at all, is quite an achievement.

As we're doing here, first thing is to verify a good connection direct to the router. Then test the adapters in adjacent sockets. If you get good speeds there then everything else is down to the mains wiring. All you can really do is avoid extension leads, especially those with surge protection.

If you need a high speed connection then consider paying someone to run a discrete ethernet cable.

On the "My BT mobile app" it states speed to the hub as 852 down 111 up.

Tested speeds to PC using various-

Speedtest Windows app ranges between 63 Down/23 Up and 335Down/30Up 6 tests in 15 minute window

Google internet speedtest varies between 63/36 and 240/40 again same window

Other speedtesters show roughly the same speeds and variances.

The WiFi from the Powerline in the same room as PC is still around mid 50 down 40 up.

This unfortunately raises some other questions....

Why is there such a variation in speeds over ethernet?

Why is there such a differential between headline hub speeds and what is received at PC?

Is the current performance over ethernet acceptable considering the rated hub speed?

Previously the hub was located in the same room as pc (copper phone cable) and I was getting a rock solid 280/45 as was expected from the previous setup, have now gone full fibre and the speeds appear much reduced even with direct ethernet.

I would have expected better from direct cabling. Any ideas anyone?
