Hey man i don't mind if its been covered, just appreciate that u didnt talk down to me lol. Well this is what the issue is. THeyre measuring 900mbps down but their speed guarantee they say is just to the ONT box. If inside the flat i cant get even 40 they dont care cuz thats not what they measure. Now I have big questions over whether that is legal because only the special BT software can tell how fast the connection is to the BT box they installed that nobody has any access to. They can tell me whatever they want really. Inside the flat, the phone sitting next to the router jumps between 40mbps and 140mbps but the direct connection to both the router and the ONT box with 3 separate computers never gets higher than 70mbps. Now I dont understand how the wifi can pull 140mbps when the direct cant. It almost feels like theres some bizarre throttling software running. I mean I'd be happy with even 200-300mbps down on either wired or wireless. But paying £40-50 a month for under 100 is sickening. Especially when I can't complain as BTs magic secret software box says my flat is getting full speed.

Pretty depressing tbh. Download speed is a whopping 50mbps maximum. Starting to think i may have just signed up to the most expensive package of my life for a speed thats the same as I had with normal fibre. I did the test on bt website which claims my box is getting the full speed. Defo isnt tho. Tried every combo possible with cat cables and connections to the router. The router defo would not be bottlenecking my download speed to this degree. Something is clearly wrong with the install somewhere.

Its more likely that your computer cannot handle a faster speed, especially as you were getting the same before you upgraded. You need a very fast PC with a good Ethernet card to see the full speed. Faster speeds simply mean that that multiple users can share the connection without slowing down.

Built the PC myself it's a 8 core ryzen 7 with super fast ethernet card onboard. Even connecting my mobile phone to the wifi im getting the same low speed. It's defo the install that has an issue. Phone would at least be getting 150mbps

What devices are you using to measure speed , WiFi connections are no indication of the speed your FTTP is delivering, you need to be testing using a wired device , something like a PC , that is Gb capable.

In the overwhelming number of cases of new FTTP customers complaining about speed , it’s the customer’s equipment or the way they connect, and their the FTTP , there is always a small chance that the speed profile has been incorrectly set , so the customer ( for example ) expects 900Mb and gets 500Mb because their ‘account’ was incorrectly set .

FYI , there is a difference between MB, Mb and mb’s any speed quoted in MB is an eighth of the Mb speed ( 8 bits in a byte ).

Perhaps you can post the actual speed test results.

To eliminate the SH2 ( presumably you are using the BT supplied router ) connected your PC directly to the ONT , and a PPPoE session, and try a speed test without the router connected.

If you have FTTP , generally it either works or doesn’t , it’s not rate adaptive like FTTC /ADSL where a a long or poor ‘line’ affects the performance, if the light level at the ONT is sufficient the service works, the optical path you have is identical to every other user on your PON , you could have a faulty ONT , but everything else is common to every other user , so everyone on your PON would be having the same issues if the headend ( for example ) were faulty , and as stated if your light level was low , your ONT would show LOS ( loss of signal )
If you are convinced your service is not delivering the speeds you pay for , report it faulty, even if the OR tech simply demonstrates the correct speed on their own equipment.
