Full fibre 500 wifi absolutely dire

After being with Sky for years and paying for 65 mbps and then only getting 17 I decided to go with BT full fiber 500 and yes I'm getting speeds to my hub of 500 but then my two TVs one Samsung phone I'll get in speeds of maybe 13 so sometimes 7 and occasional 40... I plugged in my sons Xbox as he is due back home after six months abroad and that was getting speeds of 17 I have spoken to BT a few times about this issue and they say I'm getting speeds of 500 to my box end of. They did change the ghtz settings to 5 and most of my devices went off line as they are only 2.4 apart from one now tv box. So am I correct in thinking that because my devices are only 2.4 they can't pull any more WiFi thru than this dire amount ? I have a WiFi tp link plugged in .. oh the engineer put the router in my lounge behind the TV!! Any help most appreciated as 17 mbps is certainly no where near enough compared to what I'm paying fir

Welcome to this user forum for BT Retail phone and broadband customers.

You are unlikely to get anything like the full speed over wireless, on a single device.

Try connecting a fast PC to the home hub, using a direct Ethernet cable. You should get the full speed.

It was never intended that people get full speed on all devices, especially on a wireless connection. The intention is to allow that bandwidth to be shared among family members and multiple devices, without each user noticing any slowdown.

Here is a quote from old post by a moderator.

"I think for the first time ever we are in a situation whereby the speed you can now get through Full Fibre outperforms the capabilities of many devices.

The Smart hub 2 does not come with Wi-Fi 6 but this is something we are looking to include in our next generation of Hub. I don't have any info as to when we will launch a new router by Wi-Fi 6 will bring some improvement.

As an example of what I mean in terms of devices not being able to support the full breadth of speed available on Full Fibre , take a look at the table below. This is just for a couple of Apple Smart Phones and Tablets along with popular Samsung models,

I didn't expect to get the full 500 to my WiFi devices but was assured by the rep and online discussion that I'd be getting more than sky gave so far my WiFi devices are getting lower than phone line Internet speeds!

Maybe also try without the tp link, i seem to remember they've caused issues previously too

I don't have a pc just laptop which I will connect via ethetnet and check but when the engineer came to fit I did a speed test on my ohone and it was way better than 15 mgps

Unfortunately WiFi speed cannot be relied upon, there are too many causes of interference. Placing the router behind the television is probably not an ideal location for it.

The engineer placed it there previously my sky router was away from Windows and at the top of a tall unit in the dining room ill try and move router to somewhere less restricted altho can't move it far due to cable length! I just feel I was sold something I cannot achieve ..

The cable between the router and the ONT (modem) can be up to 100M. It might be worth buying a longer cable and siting the router in a better location.

The speed of the WiFi link is totally independent of your broadband speed btw.

The speed is only guaranteed on a wired connection, not on Wi-Fi. No ISP will guarantee wireless speeds.

As @licquorice said, you just need a longer Cat5e ethernet cable to move the Hub. These are only a few pounds from the likes of Amazon.

Having said that, your reported speeds are very low & suggest another issue. I'd would probably be an idea to to factory reset the Hub via the hole next to the USB socket. Note that if you also took Digital Voice & have saved contacts, they will be lost unless you back them up first. Also as @garybs29 said, leave the TP-Link out of the equation for now.

I don't have the digital voice I just have broadband .

I've just sat next to my router and done a speed check and got 12 mbps upload 10, download. Awful I will turn off tp link theb re test

Tp Link is a manufacturer of electronic devices, but people tend to use it when they mean powerline adapter.
