Connecting a BT disc to my computer, which has an RJ45 port rather than the traditional type

Hello - I'm trying to connect my BT disc to my new computer. I used to do this with an ethernet cable. However, my new computer has an RJ45 port rather than the traditional type. I'm trying to find a wire with the right connections so that it is the old type at one and the new one at the other.

Will that work? Or is it more complicated than that?

Thanks in advance,

Robin

Ethernet cables use RJ45.

Not entirely sure what you are trying to connect to what and why.

Thanks for replying.

There must have been some kind of change - or I may not be using the right terminology. The cable used fitted my old computer but not this one. The old wire was definitely not an RJ45. It looks like this:

That is RJ45.

Is there a particular reason to connect a WiFi disc to your computer by Ethernet rather than WiFi?

Are you sure your new computer actually has an Ethernet card? Many laptops, particularly Apple devices don't.

A pic or full make/model of this new computer may help. As previously alluded to, what you're suggesting doesn't really make any sense as ethernet is RJ45.

No idea what you mean by 'traditional type'. It is an RJ45 exactly the same as your old one would have been. Ethernet cables use RJ45 as shown in your earlier picture.

That's a compact RJ45 for use on laptops. The bottom will hinge open to provide the full size socket.

Or as it says in your pic, "flip down". 😉
