Hello,

We have been unable to access some websites via our home broadband. At the moment Argos.co.uk, joules.com and next.co.uk all three return similar issues. All our devices (laptop, phone, tablet) return the same problem when accessing the internet through our BT homehub5. If we switch to 4G on our phones the websites are available. This makes me think it's the router.

The websites return these errors,

You don't have permission to access "http://www.argos.co.uk/" on this server.

The errors.edgesuite doesn't give any clue either.

Check MYBT and if web protect activated then turn it off

Hello, thank you for your reply. I have turned off web protect 24 hours before posting the question as I saw this had helped other people. The websites are still blocked.

We are still getting blocked from certain websites when connected through braodband. Has anyone got any ideas?

I spoke with BT and they also suggested turning off web protect. This has been off for over a week now.

It should have an https prefix not http, as its a secure website. That sounds like you have an issue with your web browser.

I checked this. The text on the page shows http://www.argos.co.uk/ but when I check in the address bar the address is https://www.argos.co.uk/.

I have tried using chrome and edge, but get the same result.

We get the same error on our mobile phones. I'm stumped.

Does it still happen if you use mobile data on your phone instead of the wireless from your BT Home Hub?

I assume you are using a bookmark. Try searching for Argos on Google, then using that link instead.

No, if we switch to mobile data it works as normal.

Web protect was turned on the first time we had the problem. I turned it off and the sites have worked for about a week.

I'm not using a bookmark, tried via a search.
I have just used the hotspot on my phone with my laptop and it all works as normal.

Have you tried a factory reset on the home hub?

No I haven't.
But it only arrived last week. We had the same issue on the old hub (home hub5)

I am inclined to think it's related to home protect. When we turned that off it all worked fine for about a week.

What is "home protect", is that a BT extra?

Are BT parental controls active?

This issue reminds me of something which affected my internet access a few years ago. I could access most websites apart from a few prominent sites such as google.com. Those were blocked with an error message, don't recall the exact wording.

Eventually I realised it was my IP address which for some reason was on some sort of blacklist. The fix was simple for me, I powered down the hub and left it several minutes. Then powered it up, which resulted in allocation of a different IP address, everything was then ok.

But before taking any action, you might check whether this might be the problem using an online check such as:

https://whatismyipaddress.com/blacklist-check

There could be a data integrity issue, where your connection profile is linked to the wrong account, and is filtering your content.

Try the factory reset first, as that will cause a change of IP address.

According to that website my IP address isn't listed on any of the black list databases.

BT are helping now, they have factory reset the hub but no change.

They have forwarded to the complaints team.

It sound like your account is somehow linked to the wrong profile, which is blocking that site.

If you know how to change the DNS setting on your computer/laptop, then change them to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, as they are Google DNS settings. That would prove whether its BT DNS which is causing the issue.
