Hi

My name is Roger and it's my first time posting. I wonder if anyone can help.

I want to run a new cable from my master bt socket box to another one in a separate room and then connect to a nearby modem. Is this possible and if so what would be the best way . I appreciate any advice

Regards Roger

The extension cable would not be a problem. Is this a shift of you existing modem or are wanting to add another?

If you have a filtered master socket then you need to connect the extension wiring to the data terminals in the master. If you don't need a phone in the new location you could just run a long RJ11 cable & plug that straight into the router.

https://www.openreach.co.uk/orpg/home/helpandsupport/how-toguides/howtoguides/downloads/NTE5C_Instructions_CP.pdf

Hi

Thanks for the reply. I intend to route the cable through the roof space to an external wall through the wall to a wall socket. Then a short rj11 cable to the modem. Will that be ok

Regards Roger

If this is an xDSL modem to router connection, then you'll normally be better off leaving the modem near the master socket and using a long ethernet cable. I'm a big fan of flat ethernet cables where suitable, they're easy to hide and reliable!

But before doing either, it may be worth trying a pair of powerline adapters to extend ethernet across the mains. Just buy from somewhere with an easy returns policy if they don't work out, but if they do it will save all that faff.

Again assuming you don't need a wired phone in there.

I rather suspect the OP is using the term 'modem' rather loosely and probably does in fact mean BT hub or other modem/router. In which case neither Ethernet solutions will work.

Thanks again to everyone. Apologies it is in fact a modem/ router supplied originally by Post office. The Ethernet cable is a possibility. The only issue is that I have three Ethernet cables from the router to various close by devices at the moment . I have a sender which extends the signal to the back of the house but with limited Ethernet ports.
