thanks for the response,

So, if I sat indoors using GMail on a mobile phone, then went to work (using gmail on a trains WiFi) when I return home the mobile phone / account IP address would be different ?

Apologies if this sounds a daft question I’m trying to get my head around how someone else can use my GMail account and IP address !

How often does the IP address change on an account ? Eg a GMail account… is it every time the BT hub reboots (power cuts etc) or if I log on to another WiFi (trains etc) then return home …

It doesn't change on an account, an IP address is allocated to a device.

If it home, your public IP address is allocated to your hub and can change. It will almost certainly change if your hub is disconnected and may change randomly for other reasons.

If you are not using your hub, your IP address will change to whatever is allocated to whatever you are connected to.

Once you return home, your IP address will revert to that of your hub.

Forget about IP addresses, that is an irrelevance. Your public IP address is dynamic, it will change every time you connect to a different source and your home address will also change from time to time. This also means that the address you were using yesterday is now used by somebody else today.

Why do you think the IP address is relevant?

You need to involve Gmail if you think your email account has been hacked, it is nothing to do with BT.

As a first step, change your password.
