This setup will work fine if it is configured properly. Unfortunately, everyone is a Sunday afternoon mechanic in IT these days and it is not something to be doing when you clearly have no idea.

Firstly, for this set up to work properly, the ones actings as wireless access points (WAPs) need to have different channels to each other, 1, 6 or 11. Ignore the channels in between. Similarly, the 5GHz need to be separate channels, 36, 40, 44 or 48. That way they don’t interfere with each other.

Secondly, the only way to keep them all up to date is to rotate which one gets to play router. The easiest way to do this is to export the configuration file for each one. As the configuration is locked to each router you will end up with three files for the three acting as WAPs and three more for the three actings as a router.

Next time an update appears, (and we must be due one, as the last, 43.01, is now four months old), you need to reconfigure one of the WAPs to act as the router and swap it for the present router. When that updates you need to reconfigure it back to the WAP setup and reconfigure the next WAP to act as the router. Put that on and let it update. Swap it out again reconfigure it back to the WAP and reconfigure the original hub to act as a router and put it back on again. I’d give it at least 24 hours between each rotation, as if you are on FTTC this amount of swapping around will screw with DLM and temporarily drop your connection speed.

While I agree with Licquorice’s point, I would also agree with TECHNO’s, complete Wi-Fi is going to be easier if you don’t understand what you are playing with.

Edit:

As far as the disconnecting goes, that’s one of the main differences between a mesh system, like Complete Wi-Fi, and what you are trying to do, which is known as Wireless Roaming.

The different channels ensure the wireless points do not interfere with each other. Your devices will lock on to whichever channel they see as strongest at the time they connect, irrespective of what the channel is or where the device is. However, if the thing he is playing Roblox on is mobile & he is moving around with it , it will keep dropping as it switches to the next strongest signal. With mesh systems you don’t get this dropping and reconnecting.

Dear Forum,

ive discussed elsewhere thr fact i have 5 SH2s in my house as repeaters, 1 conmnected to BB and 4 are cabled in corners of house/studio to extend wifi, and the merits +- of this over the WIFI points BT offer.. so not here to discuss this.

What id like to ask if how to update those remote SH2s. The 1 connected to the broadband [is this called my access point?] auto updates. Assume if i swap that temporarily for one of the other SH2s around the house, as these others have altered IPs to allow them all to work on single SSID, so a 2nd SH2 has IP of 192.168.1.253, that would not connect to incoming broadband therefore would not update?

Why do i want to? One example is my sons Roblox on PC drops out on the point hes connected to, but does not when hes next to main access point SH2. They are the same SH2s, strength is fine, ont change is SH2 firmwares.

To update a hub it needs to be connected to line as the first device, it doesn't matter what IP address you have given it, that is just on the LAN side of things.

I very much doubt if any updates will fix any problems you may have.

BT/EE wouldn't recommend setting up the network this way , having 2 SMart Hub 2's on the network wont work as only one Smart Hub 2 can be configured to the exchange, there other would only act as a LAN router.

There is a far better package that includes Wifi extenders call complete WIFI , you will be allowed up to 3 extenders as part of the package and they are included in the package price.

https://youtu.be/FMZjznsFVxo

BT also offers a guarantee that if the wifi is not fully achievable in each room with all three extenders they give you £100.

This is a far better way of achieving what you want on your network.

Re-purposing already owned hubs is a perfectly reasonable and cheap way of extending a home network.

BT/EE absolutely don't know or care about how your home network is configured

i appreciate this, but i know people who have issues, need closer discs in their house, so have 5-6 for a normal sized house. i think id need more. Plus i have a studio 100m down the garden which has an amoured network cable to it, so would need a different solution for this.

This system works really well for me, and my only issue is the uuodating of 'repeaters' and this Roblox issue.

for the uninitiated [me], does it matter which port in the back of the SH2 that the connection to the wall plate is made? i have a Cat5/6 cable connection into wall plate now rather then a phone line port [apologies for lack of knowledge or termonology] so does it matter which of those for ports i use?

So do you have FTTP rather than FTTC?

If so you need to configure port 4 of the hub as a WAN port.

There is probably a catch22 here as it requires a certain version of the hub to make port4 configurable and your version might be too old.

Possibly.

The fundamental question here is how your broadband is delivered, is it full fibre or copper from the cabinet? That will determine what and how can be updated.

My wall socket was changed last year from what id call a normal phone line socket to a powered socket with a RJ45 connection in and lights ion. this is what my SH2 connects to.

if its 'FTTP on' in technical log for the Gateway router, then yes it is on.

That can be on regardless of whether you actually have FTTP

ok

For context, checked .253 router and FTTP is off, as assume its not th gateway so this should be off?

It doesn't matter unless you need Port 4 as an extra LAN port, but if you have FTTP and need to connect that router to line, you will need to set it to 'On'

ok

You have FTTP, full fibre.

You need to set Port4 to FTTP mode, that is the only port that can be used to connect to the ONT

You will only be able to update Smart Hub 2s that are already at the version of firmware that supports toggling port 4 from LAN to WAN and not Smart Hubs at all.
