Smart Hub 2 with Mesh Tenda Nova MW6

I recently moved house bringing Tenda Nova MW6 mesh. On moving I’ve got a brand FTTC service and Smart Hub 2 router. I’ve reset the Tenda mesh units (hold for >6s) and connected cable from global symbol on mesh to WAN port on smart hub.
But whilst I can find Nova WiFi and connect to it, app starts to configure but then says “fail to detect your connection type”. And I can’t go any further.
Is there something with Smart Hub 2 that stops it playing with mesh? When I signed up with BT as ISP I specifically asked if I could use Nova since didn’t want to pay extra for disks.

You connect to a LAN port, not the WAN port although port 4 doesn't become a WAN port unless the hub is set to full fibre mode.

The mesh needs to be in access point mode rather than router mode.

Thanks. How do I make that mode change?
I’ll try WAN vs LAN. I assume you mean Gig Ethernet 1?
