New build extending wired connection to garage

Hi all

recently bought a new build with a detached garage, and the detached garage has a home office on the back of it. Was promised the home office has internet connectivity but after moving in, it doesn’t.

A formal complaint later and the developer is now saying they will install a cable connection to the home office. The problem is I’m unsure if they know what they’re talking about..

the grey box/customer service point is on the front of the house, ONT is on the first floor landing in the airing cupboard. From that cupboard there is an Ethernet (I assume) connection set up to to the back of my tv in the living room.

the two options they’ve given me are trunk a cable from the living room connection or one from the CSP at the front of the house. I chose the latter as it’s less invasive but doing some research I keep finding that really they should be trunking an Ethernet cable from the ONT I already have in the airing cupboard, as they can’t just connect to the CSP without installing a second ONT in the home office which will then require me to have a second ISP?

The CSP is simply a fibre splice point to connect external and internal fibres and is therefore not accessible for any purpose. The ONT is just a fibre modem and needs to be connected to a router (Smart Hub 2).

Any Ethernet connections need to be made to the router.

So I’m correct in thinking what they should be doing is installing an Ethernet port in the airing cupboard where the ONT + router are, that goes out to the garage/home office ?

that way I just connect the router to the Ethernet port they install and it should work?

You don’t necessarily need to have the router in the same location as the ONT , you could connect the ONT to the Ethernet socket in the upstairs cupboard ( with a short Ethernet cable ) , then the corresponding Ethernet socket behind the TV connects to the now relocated router , this connects to your TV and you (or the developer) also run a longer Ethernet cable connected to the router ( now in the TV room ) to the home office location, so it has an Ethernet connection , this may be easier as it’s ran from a downstairs location rather than an upstairs location ……as stated , running an extra cable from the CSP was always a nonsensical suggestion.

I was pondering moving house a couple of years back.

I got the distinct impression a lot of developers think everybody uses Wi-Fi these days, so they do not need to put any ethernet cabling in. Short-sighted.
