Opted out of BT/EE Wi-Fi but unsecured Wi-Fi still broadcasting from new SH2 router

Hi,

I have had an old BT hub for a long time, and opted out of public Wi-Fi when first setting up - so my old router never broadcast an open Wi-Fi channel for others to use.

I received a new EE SH2 router yesterday in preparation for digital voice and upgrade to full fibre.

I set up the router, and when logged on and searching for Wi-Fi found the hub, along with the public EE Wi-Fi and EE Wi-Fi-X showing.

These are definitely from my hub as when I turned it off, both instantly disappeared as options for Wi-Fi on my phone - when turned the router back on, both reappeared.

I logged on to my BT and EE managers, and found that the BT/EE Wi-Fi had been opted in (without my knowledge), so I opted out on both pages - but the extra two networks still remain active.

I checked that I was opted out, and although nothing tells me I am, I have the option to check the box to opt in on the relevant pages, so assume I am opted out.

I phoned BT this morning, who told me that I was opted out, but they could not assist any further and could not explain why the public Wi-Fi was still broadcasting from the router.

They suggested sending another router - but this would probably do the same.

I see from various forum searches that this is a common problem - but surely I should not have to stand for this - if I don’t want my hub to broadcast an open public channel, BT or EE should be able to stop this.

I have checked the hub manager and this shows public Wi-Fi is active - and there is no option to turn this off even in the admin menu.

This is going to drive me nuts if it can’t be resolved - so I ask in the hope that someone can assist with deactivating the public Wi-Fi on my router.

Thanks in advance.

CM

If you have opted out in MYBT it can take up to 14 days before hub is updated

The new router would automatically show BTWIFI/EEWIFI as active. This would also happen if you did a factory reset of router

The forum mods don't have account access so you can try CS 03301234150

I have no idea why folks get so uptight about something that has absolutely no security implications or effect on their service.

Thanks for this - just had a chat with technical online - they can see I have opted out, but also understand the router is still pushing public Wi-Fi - they have raised a complaint and given me a number to ring tomorrow where someone should be able to disable the public Wi-Fi in the hub manager remotely.

not sure how they are going to do this as I have no option to do so with the admin page open…. But will post back if it gets sorted.

It’s the principle….i’ve opted out, so the router should deactivate that option.
Why should I allow others to use my electricity and bandwidth when I have clearly expressed this is NOT wanted.

It's not your bandwith, the wifi uses separate & the electricity usage doesn't change!

Surely it would use my bandwidth……at the minute, I’m still copper to house, so only around 34mb download….. there can’t be a stash of download speed set aside on top of that for public Wi-Fi - if my hub can only put our 34mb and a public user is hogging 20mb of that, surely there would only be 14mb left.

i get that the hub owner would get priority, but the bandwidth has to come from somewhere.

i also cannot believe that if my router is in standby and nothing in the house is using Wi-Fi, but someone elsewhere nearby logs on and uses the router, it would not consume any more electricity….. I know we’re taking about pennies, but that’s my whole issue….its the principle.

i have opted out and that should mean exactly that - the service should be turned off!

You as the BT customer has bandwidth priority so if you are using your max bandwidth then nobody can connect to BTWIFI

There is also no connection between your home network and the BTWIFI so anyone who logs in to BTWIFI cannot access your home network

How can there be no connection between my hub and bt Wi-Fi?
I thought BT public Wi-Fi was taken from my hub if someone logs on to that particular hotspot?
