My mum has just moved house and was sent a Smart Hybrid Connect device by BT to provide internet while she is waiting for the house to be connected. However, all the tutorials I have read and watched seem to need an already functioning Smart Hub in order to set the Smart Hybrid Connect up. The Smart Hub obviously doesn’t have broadband in the new house so is just flashing purple whenever turned on.

Is it necessary to have a functioning Smart Hub in order to set up the Smart Hybrid Connect?

In a sense, yes, but not in the sense that it is connected to the internet.

The idea is that the Hybrid connect device provides the internet connection via the mobile phone system in the absence of the usual internet connection but it still needs to go through the hub.

It's flashing purple due to lack of DSL input, the hybrid connect should kick in and replace the missing connection.

It's possible that you need to keep your hybrid connect unit plugged into the SH2 and then switch the SH2 off and then on again to re-boot it. This should cause the hybrid connect unit to kick in.
