We're currently suffering an extended service outage and thus no service via the BT hub. We're covering this via mobile tethering (unlimited data provided by Halo 3).

But it also means that nothing on the hub can communicate. For example, we can't see our security cameras, and I can't send a file from one device to another.

Therefore I'm thinking of getting a separate 2nd hub just to connect all the home devices to, and then plug that into the BT Hub. I realise that this is only likely to help with devices connected in via ethernet, such as CCTV, and possibly laptops. Phones, etc have to connect via wifi.

So this needs more thought.

You don't need an internet connection to connect to devices on your LAN, wireless and Ethernet.

Thanks, but as soon as the line went down, the hub stopped working and the CCTV went offline.

How do you mean the Hub stopped working?

Can you not access the management page at 192.168.1.254

A LAN doesn't require an internet connection and the hub doesn't need an internet connection to work.

Are you confusing cause and effect? Has the hub failed therefore the internet has gone down?

Just to recap, we've had an outage since Friday 17th. There is a incident that has taken out half the street - BT + EE, and it is apparently a cable failure that cannot currently be accessed due to flooding.

So no connection, no phone, no internet.

When it happened, the LAN stopped working as well. The hub currently shows orange. I can access it via 192.168.1.254, have reset it, and it lists the devices, but these are not interconnecting. Mobile can't see laptop, neither can see CCTV, etc.

What are you actually trying to do? How are you trying to connect the devices? What protocol are you using? Are you sure you weren't connecting via a website rather than directly?

There is no way you need an internet connection for a LAN to operate.

Well, for example, I use Total Commander to connect android phone to laptop for file transfer, using IP address. I don't expect that to be zooming out and back over the Internet, do you?

I've no idea, its not an app I'm familiar with and may well transfer files via a central server rather than directly on the LAN. However, using Solid Explorer on my Android I can access my laptop's file system quite happily with the line disconnected from the hub as expected.
