@WSH I didn't actually state that would fix the problem. What I stated was that sometimes updates to a PC might be able to address issues, even with browsers. Obviously, this does have nothing to do with Security Certificates, I was merely as I stated, trying to make sure all angles were covered. Buy hey, I can't get over fussed by it.

I am using Window 11 version 23H2.I have FFTP broadband supplied by BT, due to not having a static IP address I have been using https://www.noip.com/ to allow me to connect and view my IP webcam. When I use an open port checker https://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ this confirms that the port concerned is open. This allowed me to view my webcam via the internet from anywhere, this worked OK until recently. When I now use the noip link, I end up at my BT router home page and do not now connect to my webcam:

I can connect and view my webcam using my mobile but not by using any Windows PC’s. I believe that the issue is caused by the BT Certificate which prevents windows allowing me to view my webcam.

Any help to resolve this problem would be appreciated.

Many thanks.

Welcome to this user forum for BT Retail phone and broadband customers.

You would not be able to connect to your external IP address from within your home network, as NAT Loopback is not available on the home hub, so you will simple be redirected back to your home hub.

You would need to access your webcam using its own local LAN IP address, or by using a device connected to a different network, like mobile data.

You can ignore the certificate error when connection to the home hub web interface, as its not a https connection.

Hi Keith,

Thank you for your prompt reply, the issue that I have is that I could view my webcam as explaind above without any problems until recently. I suspect that some thing must have changed perhaps in a Windows update that has created the problem of not now being able to view my webcam.

Many thanks,

Jim.

At one point NAT loopback was enabled on the hub, it has probably now been disabled again with a hub update meaning you cannot access your external IP address from within your network.

Can you access the camera by using your mobile on 4G rather than WiFi?

It should be possible to access your external IP from outside the LAN - support for this was added to BT hubs many years ago.
I've just tried accessing your IP address and it shows a FOSCAM IPCam Client page when I use HTTP but fails to connect when I use HTTPS.

You're trying to access over HTTPS (which is why you see the certificate error). Chrome recently updated to automatically try HTTPS before HTTP - I suspect this is why you're seeing this issue now. Try manually changing the address in the address bar to http:// instead of https:// and I suspect it'll work OK.

Note: you're currently running your camera over the internet insecurely. If you access it from an untrusted network, they will be able to read your username and password and access your cameras without your knowledge. A quick check of the Foscam web site suggests that it should be possible to access your camera over HTTPS instead - it would be wise to map this port on the firewall instead.

Firstly I'd check your camera supports HTTPS - try going to https://your_camera_ip in a browser from your PC.
It'll show a certificate error if it supports HTTPS - accept that and then confirm it works OK for you.

Assuming that works then just edit the firewall rule that you set up - it's currently mapping the external port 80 to your camera port (default 1818 I believe). Just change that to map from external port 443 to internal port 443.

When you access your camera remotely, you will always see a certificate error - that's unavoidable I'm afraid, as the camera will be serving an internally-generated certificate that your browser can't trust.

The strange part is that the connection works from a mobile device but fails from Windows PCs, which makes it seem like something on the PC/browser side rather than the webcam or port forwarding itself. I’ve also seen cases where certificates, browser security settings, or cached redirects cause this kind of behavior.

I’m also wondering if the BT router page appearing instead of the webcam interface means the request is reaching the router but not being forwarded correctly anymore, or if the router is intercepting it. Since the port checker shows the port is open, the next thing I’d be looking at is whether the hostname is resolving correctly and whether Windows is blocking the certificate/connection. Hopefully someone has found a workaround for this because it’s a really frustrating issue when it suddenly stops after working for a long time.

I guess you're accessing it from a Windows PC on your home network. The hub will not allow you to map port 443 from inside the LAN, as it would prevent you from being able to manage your hub anymore.

To access the camera when on your Windows PC, use the local IP address instead of the DNS name.

Alternatively, map it to a different port - e.g. 8443. This will work inside and outside the network.

@WSH I did think about mentioning about security certificates but it may or may not be relevant to the situation.

Unfortunately for those using older motherboards, it might not be so simple as updating the security certificates might require a BIOS update, which for some, might be too difficult to implement. My own motherboard is circa 2021 and that did require me to update the BIOS, a simple enough task for those of us used to delving into our PC and that added the new 2023 certificates. For those that have no idea what we're talking about, see link:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/topic/secure-boot-certificate-update-status-in-the-windows-security-app-5ce39986-7dd2-4852-8c21-ef30dd04f046

You're absolutely correct though, something like a OS update can indeed fix issues such as this, however there is a reluctance amongst many to implement such updates for one reason or another. There are allegedly still people using Windows XP for reasons known only unto themselves.

I currently have six machines. (Don’t ask). An Asus laptop with an Intel processor, three custom build desktops, two with Asus boards and AMD processors, plus an old MSI board with an Intel. All Windows 11. All have had an update relating to the certificate expiration in June at various times over the last three months and all under slightly different names.

I even have two old Windows 10 laptops, circa 2011, that are not capable of running Windows 11, ever. I even connected them to the internet, (which I don’t usually do now), and they got an update.

You’re right though, a couple of the machines have needed a BIOS update as well and reality is, if you want to keep an old machine running, you may have to learn how to do a BIOS update.

The windows updates being referred to here are related to the UEFI secure boot certificate, and have absolutely nothing to do with certificates shown in web browsers.

Also, the certificate error being shown is because the browser is trying to launch the hub console using a DNS name that isn't in the certificate - not related to anything expired.

Yes, a fair point.

I should read the whole thread first, rather than just respond to Kimberlin's post. My bad.
