I have full fibre internet which speed tests on my mobile show as speeds of 120mbps, the hub speed shows as 150mbps. My desktop computer only shows 15Mbps which is awful! On a good day I may achieve 30Mbps. We have wiFi extenders in place.

I understand my desktop PC may only get a part of the whole available Wi Fi but there is little else connected at the moment.

A friend has suggested my PC may need a better Wi Fi adapter and one that I can plug into the PC myself without opening the box. Problem is - How do I know which type to get and will it be an improvement on the one there already?

As far as I can tell, I have a Realtek 8812AE Wireless LAN802.11ac PC1-E NIC 2024.0.4208.

Would I be able to get better speeds to the PC please with newer kit please.

I'd appreciate any wise words/thoughts you can offer.

Thank you

Marg0105

The “ac” in that is the giveaway.

The ac standard, (also known as “Wi-Fi 5”), is pretty up to date and should be capable of 433Mb/s upstream plus 433Mb/s downstream, (so it is often quoted as 866Mb/s).

The Smart Hub 2 is ac capable. If you were to buy a plug-in dongle for the next standard up, “ax” or “Wi-Fi 6”, you would need a Smart Hub 3 or a third party router to support it. (It’s important to understand that, even with an ax wireless card, if the router can only put out ac, ac speeds are all you’ll ever get).

More to the point, 15Mb/s suggests something is majorly wrong. Under the circumstances I’m far from convinced that a faster Wi Fi dongle would solve your problem.

Unfortunately, Wi-Fi is a complicated beast and trying to fault find it on here is neigh impossible, but some points to look at:

When was the last time you updated the drivers for that wireless card?

Another problem could be your distance from the router. (Wireless goes through solid objects but only up to a point).

Or it could be interference from other wireless sources, in which case the wireless has to resend the data multiple times to get it through, hence it destroys the overall speed. Changing to a different channel would help.

Thank you so much for your reply I do appreciate you taking the time to do so.

I did wonder if it was too complicated to sort here but I am already reassured by the thought that the WIFI driver is capable. I've never updated the driver so will investigate how to do that. The walls of this house aren't thick but the router is downstairs & my PC upstairs with 2 Wi Fi expanders are in place.
