I've used a btinternet.com email address for years, it was originally a Yahoo account.

Recently my laptop crashed after a system upgrade and I needed to access my bitlocker for the recovery key. This entailed sending a security key to my btinternet.com email address, which is the alternative email address for my Microsoft account. Only it didn't arrive. I tried several times, it wasn't in my inbox or spam. Lengthy chat session with Microsoft support didn't help, so I had to change my alternative email address. This meant waiting 30 days as a 'security measure' before Microsoft would allow use of the new alternative email.

The waiting period was finally up today, the security key went straight into the Gmail address I'd provided and the laptop is now working fine again. I've had a similar problem in the past with eBay, I had to set up a new account using my Hotmail address because stuff wasn't being received at the btinternet address.

Does anyone know why this happens and if there's a workround? I lost use of my laptop for 30 days and wasted a lot of time on chat trying unsuccessfully to sort it out.

Did you check your "Blocked Senders" list in case the Microsoft email address or the Microsoft domain, the bit after @, has been blocked?

Thank you, I hadn't thought of that, there were some addresses with 'microsoft' in them, but not the one they used to send stuff to gmail. I don't ever recall blocking any Microsoft addresses, and a couple of them won't delete from the blocked senders list. Mystery!
