is there a way via the BT box to access the internet ? then you could watch you tube, disney+ etc etc

BT can't just add premium apps as and when. They have to have a commercial agreement with the owner of the apps and with Youview being a retail platform just makes it trickier because the apps would be available on all compatible boxes so who would be responsible for the commercial side?? This is possibly why BT are moving towards the Pro Box loans for subscribers so that they can take control of their own eco-system and eventually Youview as an open platform will die out...

there is no reason why BT should not allow you to access the internet via their box

They would need to rebuild the Youview software and OS to include a Web Browser and then keep it updated with relevant security patches, anti virus software etc .. it's not that straight forward and could be quite costly for the small amount of BT TV subscribers that want a web browser...
