New remote does not adjust volume

I have set up a new BT box this morning which works fine including all functions on the remote except the volume control. A technician informed me over the phone that new remotes are not able to control volume on certain tv models. Mine is a sony bravia which worked fine with the old box and remote. Surely BT have not developed a new system that is incompatible with a well known TV brand. Can anyone help?

Can you not just use the old remote as that should work OK?
