Recently, I seem to find a lot of programmes on ITV and channel 4 especially that you get near toi the end & it says "this recording has finished" with about 3 or 4 minutes to go. I can't add time on to the recording, so is this a known fault or is there a fix for it?

thanks Nigel

@nigelf1234

Would these by any chance be programmes that are overrunning their scheduled time, as shown by the EPG?

YouView boxes use a system called Accurate Recording, where they rely on time markers sent out by the broadcasters to start and stop the recording.

Works great if programmes overrun, and the broadcaster moves the markers accordingly. Works drains if they don’t - and too often, they don’t 😢

But despite being pleaded with for 12 years to allow padding, given the mounting evidence right from day 1 of Accurate Recording being the most misleading name ever given to a broadcasting feature, YouView have been obdurate that they don’t intend to ever fix this, thereby keeping alive the shrinking band of competing makers of Freeview recorders.

If there is something you care about desperately, record the following programme as well, as those last few minutes will precede the recording of that programme.

Doesn't work well for series recordings, alas.

Take heart also, though, that if you record a BBC programme in IP Mode, the BBC will now play it back to you from the BBC iPlayer, thus ensuring its completeness, albeit additionally depriving you of its surround sound, if there was any.

(And not just cutting it short, but cutting it right out, if it was never put on iPlayer, or expired off it before you watched the programme)

I am having the same problem and have been told by EE TV that it is my freeview signal - this doesn't make any reasonable sense to me because if that were the case then my recordings would be cutting off all over the place not just at the end of a programme. It is extremely frustrating. I saw on another thread that someone was sent a new box but I don't know if that would work. I am considering closing my account.

I have exactly the same problem with ITV stations and am pretty sure that Midnight_Voice is quite right in suggesting that it is because ITV in particular are not very good at sending out the appropriate signal at the right time. If that is the case, then I am afraid that the broadband technical team are unlikely to be able to help.

But YouView relies on them being that careful (which they aren’t, and don’t even have to be), and doesn’t provide any fallback mechanism like padding, where you can add a few minutes fore and aft.

As it’s only ever a few minutes at either end that the broadcasters aren’t careful about, that’s why recordings aren’t ’cutting off all over the place’.

A new EETV box will make no difference. You might want to consider a Manhattan T4-R that implements padding, though it hasn’t got a remote app like the YouView boxes have.

I have a Manhatten T-3R and is is excellent. As well as allowing padding to be added to recordings, it also allows fast forwarding through the ads on all its recordings, something that I understand the EE boxes now don't allow, at the behest of the advertisers.

Recordings made in Aerial Mode do not have this restriction.

It’s also true that if you make a recording of a BBC channel in IP Mode and try to play it back, the BBC treat this as an invitation to play it back to you on the BBC iPlayer, and not from the actual recording you made. Playback is also conditional on the programme being available on iPlayer at the time you try to play it back. Again, recordings made in Aerial Mode do not have this restriction.

Both of these restrictions are at the behest of the broadcasters, not of the advertisers.
