EETV or Sky Q

I am thinking about moving to EETV with the Entertainment package with HD boost and duo mini tv boxes. At present I have been with Sky for over 26 years. Can’t justify sky increased prices in April will cost £58 per month. The EE TV package is £36 per month.

what is EETV like and help / guidance would be appreciated

@Partykiosk Ask plenty of questions and don’t assume that everything works in the same way that you’re used to with Sky. It doesn’t. If you tell us what’s important to you, we’ll let you know if you you can expect to get that with EETV. Plenty have come unstuck when it comes to multi-room and recordings and mini boxes, for example.

I know that you can’t watch recordings on the mini tv boxes, but what is NOW like and what is the picture quality like and the EPG tv guide like

Have you thought about maybe going with Now direct. They often have discounts that EETV dont offer.

I have Now direct since leaving BT TV as it was called and picture quality is very good when watching HD.

I Have entertainment , Sky Cinema and Boost.

EPG on EETV is fine. It can go back 7 days or forward 7 days.

You will also find that the box dont have all the same apps that you get with Sky Q. If you go for the pro box.

The EPG via the Now app just has a now and next.

The Now app is due to get a new look with a software update in the coming weeks.

I presume you can watch live BBC and ITV channels on the pro box and not through BBC Iplayer or ITVX apps.

The wife wants the pro box so she can record programmes.

Ok this is where it may get a bit sticky. You can watch the terrestrial channels in two ways, via IPTV (broadband, no need for a aerial) or over the air which needs an aerial (you can't use a satellite dish).

Via IPTV there are less channels, and you can't record the BBC channels (you can set a timer to "record", but when it comes to playing it back it opens iplayer to view. And recording from the ITV channels you can't skip the ads. All other IP channels are recordable though.

Via the aerial there are no restrictions, but again you can't use your dish.

But I presume that you can’t use both (Iptv & aerial) the same time? It will have to one connection

Per device yes, you have to set the Box Pro up in either Aerial Mode or IP Mode.

If you change your mind, you can swap, but it needs a Factory Reset as part of this, so it’s best to get it settled before you start.

The Box Minis are only ever in IP Mode.

@Partykiosk If recording is important to you it might be worth bearing in mind that IP only allows 2 simultaneous recordings. Aerial mode allows for 4 terrestrial channels as a minimum and 2 IP channels simultaneously. It’s also a question of quality v quantity as far as PQ is concerned. You get more channels in aerial mode but more HD channels in IP mode.

It's a crying shame that the IP channels haven't increased in content in the last 2 years or so. The crazy thing is Freely have more free streaming HD channels than EETV. Even Legend, PBS America and True Crime is vastly superior, quality wise, to their EETV equivalents.

Ok, that can only be your decision. Your initial post suggests that Sky are asking too much for what you’re getting from them. EETV as an alternative might not be for you, but it would be worthwhile to do an audit of what you actually watch, and see how that could be sourced. As @ney suggested to you, NOW can be subscribed to direct, as can all of the other apps. In addition the FTA channels can be recorded on a pvr such as a Manhattan.

I have been following your post as I am in exactly the same position! I have no answers but just wanted to say I agree with you. I am basically looking for a Sky Q at a cheaper cost. I guess things are changing and it’s difficult to go along with it I guess. Neither of my kids watch live TV, everything is streamed in their households.

I phoned Sky (in an Indian call centre) and cancelled the whole package within the 30 days of the price hike.
I had a phone call from them offering a better price and with more haggling being a VIP member I accepted. Which was the same price for a brand new customer. So I stayed with the “devil I know” for the time being.
